Delhi Government Establishes Committee After Malviya Nagar Fire Killed 21

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has initiated a response following the tragic hotel fire in Malviya Nagar that resulted in 21 fatalities. A joint committee has been formed to explore safety violations and carry out inspections at similar establishments throughout the city.

Effective Thursday, teams comprising officials from the district administration, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Police, and the Power Department will start these inspections. This proactive measure comes amid intensified scrutiny surrounding guesthouses and bed-and-breakfast (B&B) operations in light of the recent tragedy.

As part of this inspection exercise, authorities have identified 18 properties in the Malviya Nagar area that are likely to undergo thorough scrutiny. Officials will assess these establishments to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations, building codes, licensing stipulations, and proper electrical connections.

Possible Consequences for Non-Compliance

Sources in the government have indicated that if significant violations are uncovered during the inspections, this could lead to a substantial sealing operation across multiple areas of Delhi. The aim is to address any potential risks posed by unsafe properties.

Government documents reveal that approximately 702 properties in Delhi currently operate under the Bed and Breakfast scheme, which permits them to serve as commercial lodgings. Officials are now tasked with verifying that these properties are functioning within the limits of the permissions they were granted.

The decision to conduct inspections follows preliminary findings from the Malviya Nagar fire incident that raise concerns about adherence to safety compliance, occupancy regulations, and the nature of the commercial activities conducted within the affected building.

Review of Licenses and Regulations

It has been reported that the licenses for the 702 properties were issued during the previous Aam Aadmi Party administration. Authorities are likely to review whether these establishments adhere to the specific terms and conditions associated with their licenses.

The newly established joint committee is expected to deliver a comprehensive report after completing the inspection activities. This report will enable further actions against establishments that are found to be in violation of safety and licensing regulations.

The Delhi government’s recent initiative reflects a wider effort to address potentially hazardous commercial and residential properties functioning under the B&B framework. Investigators are continuing to delve into the circumstances surrounding one of the deadliest fire incidents in recent memory, striving to enhance public safety across the capital.
