Bangladesh is set to conduct its presidential election on August 20, as revealed by the Election Commission on Thursday. This decision follows the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who stepped down nearly two years prior to the end of his term. Shahabuddin, a long-time ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, announced his resignation on July 24, citing health issues.

The announcement of the election comes amidst speculation regarding the discomfort of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government with Shahabuddin’s position as the largely ceremonial head of state. The voting will occur between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm on the scheduled date at the Jatiya Sangsad session hall, according to statements from the Election Commission.

Nomination and Administrative Details Released

The Election Commission has established a timetable for the election process. Nomination papers are required to be submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner’s office from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on August 13. Following this, the scrutiny of these papers is set to begin at 10:00 am on August 16. The deadline for candidates to withdraw their nominations is 4:00 pm on August 18, ensuring a streamlined process leading up to the election.

Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat, articulated that the election schedule was designed in consultation with Parliamentary Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. Ahmed is currently acting as President for a limited period of 90 days in accordance with constitutional provisions.

He confirmed that the voter list has been prepared and noted that all remaining administrative tasks would be finalised prior to the election date. This timely announcement aims to facilitate a smooth transition in governance following Shahabuddin’s resignation.

Background on Shahabuddin and Political Context

Shahabuddin, a veteran of the 1971 Liberation War and a former judge of the lower judiciary, had assumed the presidency in April 2023 for a term of five years. His election by the previous parliament marked a significant political milestone, being the last constitutional officeholder after the tumultuous student-led protests that led to the ousting of Hasina’s Awami League government in July and August of 2024.

Reports emerged suggesting that Shahabuddin had reached out to Hasina via phone, an action that allegedly displeased the leadership of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party. However, Shahabuddin has categorically dismissed such allegations as unfounded. Since August 5, 2024, Hasina has reportedly been residing in India in light of the ongoing political turmoil.
