CSR Initiative Ensures Vision Care to Tihar Jail Inmates in Delhi
New Delhi, India: ENTOD Pharmaceuticals, in collaboration with Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital, organised an eye care camp on January 21 at the Central Jail, North India providing essential vision screenings and treatment to over 325 inmates and staff members. The initiative aimed to address common eye conditions through refraction tests, spectacle prescriptions, free medication distribution, and awareness sessions on ophthalmic hygiene and preventive eye care.
With India home to nearly 25% of the world’s visually impaired population, regular eye checkups are critical to early detection and treatment. Over 62 million Indians live with vision impairment, and 13% suffer from complete blindness. Cataracts remain the leading cause, accounting for 62.6% of blindness, followed by refractive errors and glaucoma. Additionally, 21 million diabetics in India experience vision issues, with 2.4 million suffering from blindness due to diabetic retinopathy. Timely interventions can help curb preventable blindness and ensure better vision health for all.
At the Central Jail camp, 235 individuals underwent refraction tests, leading to 220 prescriptions for corrective eyewear. 14 patients were identified for cataract surgery, while 275 received free medicines and eye drops. The camp also included eye donation counseling and educational sessions led by experts from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital.
Mr. Nikkhil K Masurkar, CEO of ENTOD Pharmaceuticals, emphasised the importance of accessible vision care, stating, “Millions across India continue to struggle with avoidable blindness due to a lack of timely checkups. Eye health should not be an afterthought, it must be a priority. Regular screenings can detect conditions before they escalate, ensuring timely treatment. At ENTOD, we believe that quality eye care should be available to all, including those in institutional settings. This initiative with VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital aligns with our commitment to ensuring eye health reaches underserved communities. Our goal is to extend such outreach programmes to many more in need.”
Dr. Pankaj Ranjan CMO at Safdarjang Hospital echoing the importance of preventive care commented, “Eye diseases often progress silently, making regular checkups essential. Cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy can cause irreversible damage if left undiagnosed. The number of inmates identified for cataract surgery in this camp highlights the need for routine screenings across all sections of society. Vision loss is more than a medical condition, it impacts independence and quality of life. Early intervention can prevent unnecessary blindness and improve well-being.”
The success of this eye care camp reflects the impact of teamwork in healthcare. With continued support from medical institutions and pharmaceutical partners, such initiatives can bridge the gap in vision care for marginalised communities.
