Indonesia’s Free Meal Programme Leads to Over 1,700 Food Poisoning Cases

The free meal initiative in Indonesia has recently resulted in a significant public health crisis, with over 1,700 individuals affected by food poisoning within a single week. This alarming situation came to light when another 777 students and teachers in Central Java reported symptoms after consuming the government-sponsored meals.

The principal of a senior high school in Lasem, Central Java, Juhartutik, confirmed that 752 students and 25 teachers fell ill after consuming grilled chicken provided by the programme. She noted that prior to distribution, a food taster identified some of the chicken as “slimy,” a detail that has intensified scrutiny of the food preparation process.

The kitchen responsible for the meal preparation claimed that the food had been cooked early in the morning, with the promise that it would be served at noon. However, Juhartutik confirmed that most affected individuals were sent home due to severe diarrhoea and vomiting, highlighting the immediate impact of the malnutrition programme gone awry.
