Congress workers staged protests across several states on Wednesday against the police action during the party’s demonstration in New Delhi and the detention of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders. The protests were held amid the party’s continued demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.

The demonstrations came a day after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several opposition leaders were detained by the Delhi Police during a protest near Lok Kalyan Marg. While the Congress accused the Centre of suppressing democratic dissent, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised counter-protests in several states.

Congress Holds Demonstrations Across States

In Tamil Nadu, Congress workers protested in Chennai against the alleged lathi charge on demonstrators in Delhi and the detention of Rahul Gandhi.

In Kerala’s Palakkad, the Youth Congress and the Kerala Students Union (KSU) organised a march demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak.

The Congress Legal Cell in Bengaluru also staged a protest against the Central Government, with demonstrators reiterating the demand for Pradhan’s resignation. Several Congress workers were detained during the protest.

In Gujarat’s Surat, police detained Congress workers who were protesting against the detention of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra while also raising the issue of the alleged NEET paper leak.

Earlier in the day, Telangana Congress workers held a ‘Chalo Lok Bhavan’ march in Hyderabad to protest Rahul Gandhi’s detention. Police were deployed outside Lok Bhavan as workers gathered for the demonstration.

BJP Organises Counter-Protests

The BJP launched counter-protests in several states in response to the Congress demonstration outside the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi.

In Hyderabad, Telangana BJP president Ramchander Rao and other party leaders were detained while marching from the party’s state headquarters towards the Congress office.

BJP workers also demonstrated outside the Congress office in Jammu, where Congress supporters gathered and raised slogans. Police intervened to prevent clashes between the two groups.

In Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada, BJP workers protested against the Congress demonstration in Delhi. Raising slogans of “Rahul Gandhi Down Down”, BJP leaders and workers marched towards the Congress office and attempted to lay siege to the premises. A scuffle broke out between workers of the two parties before police intervened.

Opposition Continues Protest in Parliament

Opposition MPs also staged a protest in Parliament wearing black clothes to register their opposition to the police action.

Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other opposition leaders participated in the demonstration within the Parliament complex.

Protest Triggered by July 20 Demonstration

The nationwide protests followed the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ demonstration in New Delhi, during which clashes broke out between protesters and the Delhi Police.

Opposition parties have alleged that police used lathi charges and tear gas against protesters and accused the government of attempting to suppress democratic protests by detaining Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders.

The Congress has continued to demand accountability over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
