Congress MP Manickam Tagore has expressed strong disapproval of Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh after Singh accused Rahul Gandhi of not fulfilling his commitments. Tagore claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to shift focus from the Opposition’s demands for a discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding alleged police brutality against students and the government’s perceived negligence concerning the examination crisis.

Tagore asserted that the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is “non-negotiable.” He indicated that the Leader of the Opposition and other leaders had met with the Lok Sabha Speaker on the previous day to raise these issues and demanded Pradhan’s resignation, which, according to Tagore, the government is unwilling to address.

The Congress party members reportedly marched to the Prime Minister’s residence to reiterate their demands for both the resignation of Pradhan and an ensuing discussion in Parliament. Tagore’s statement highlights the rising tensions between the Congress party and the BJP over the handling of educational matters.

Allegations of Backtracking on Promises

This controversy follows Jitendra Singh’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi during a Congress protest on July 21. Singh alleged that during this meeting, Gandhi changed his stance by initially asking for a discussion in Parliament, then adding the demand for Pradhan’s resignation. Singh referred to Gandhi’s actions as unfortunate and indicative of a departure from democratic norms.

According to Singh, Rahul Gandhi had agreed to end his sit-in protest if the government would discuss matters related to NEET and the associated agitation. However, Singh claims that when the opportunity arose to formalise the discussion, Gandhi’s demands multiplied without prior notice.

With accusations of inconsistent messaging, Singh underscored the need for senior leaders to uphold their commitments. He stated that it undermines the democratic process when prominent leaders, such as Gandhi, shift their positions under new pressures.

Response from Rahul Gandhi and Congress Leaders

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has countered the allegations made by Singh. He pointedly denounced the police’s actions against peaceful protestors during their rally towards Parliament, asserting that the voice of students should not be disregarded. In a message posted on X, Gandhi encouraged supporters, particularly those who care about justice for students, to join the protests.

Gandhi stressed that any attack on students equates to an attack on every Indian family. He indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not evade accountability and urged people to assemble in front of the Prime Minister’s residence to advocate for students’ rights. “The voice of India’s students will not be ignored,” he stated emphatically.

This unfolding situation illustrates a critical moment in Indian politics, highlighting the clash between two major political factions and their respective approaches to educational concerns.
