On July 24, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal announced that the party has commenced the process of selecting District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents in Karnataka. This follows an initial meeting with the state leadership, where strategic discussions were held regarding the leadership structure. Venugopal informed reporters that further decisions would be made in due course as the process evolves.

During his address, Venugopal acknowledged that this gathering marked the beginning of the selection process. He emphasised the importance of this initial discussion with Karnataka Congress leaders and highlighted that additional plans will unfold as they move forward. This reflects the Congress party’s focus on aligning its local leadership with upcoming electoral strategies.

Leadership Restructuring After Chief Minister’s Appointment

The leadership restructuring within the Karnataka Congress has intensified since DK Shivakumar assumed the role of Chief Minister in June. The party is reportedly undergoing a significant overhaul as it seeks to bolster its organisational framework in the state. The cabinet under Shivakumar currently consists of 14 members, including Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, addressing key portfolios to enhance governance.

In the recent cabinet formation, Priyank Kharge was appointed to oversee Home Affairs, while Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, took charge of Urban Development. This membership composition demonstrates the Congress party’s intent to reinforce its influence in state governance and address pressing issues through its cabinet.

As the party navigates its internal changes, discussions regarding cabinet expansions have reportedly been postponed, allowing for a concentrated focus on the selection of DCC presidents and other organisational matters. Congress leaders are keen to solidify their groundwork in Karnataka ahead of future electoral challenges.

Congress Supports NEET Protest Demands

In response to the ongoing nation-wide protests concerning the NEET paper leak, Venugopal articulated the Congress party’s support for several critical demands. He prominently stated that the party is advocating for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, as well as compensation for families of students who have tragically taken their own lives due to the distress caused by these events.

Venugopal elaborated on the demands, calling for an inquiry into the handling of protests by the Delhi Police, the withdrawal of cases against protesting students, and significant compensation measures for the families of deceased aspirants. He conveyed that these issues represent the major concerns of the protesting students, thus requiring an appropriate response from the Central Government.

Adding to this discourse, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi addressed the media earlier, supporting these same demands and showcasing an injured protester who suffered serious injuries during the demonstrations. The exigency of immediate measures has been highlighted, stressing the need for a governmental response to the rising unrest surrounding the NEET exam issues.

Concurrently, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh held a meeting with the Cockroach Janata Party delegation. Nadda reported that discussions lasted nearly two hours, addressing three main demands alongside five suggested reforms for examination processes. He indicated a willingness to continue the dialogue in a subsequent meeting, signifying an ongoing engagement with stakeholders to navigate these pressing education-related matters.
