Congress Appoints B. Manickam Tagore As Chief Of Tamil Nadu Unit

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress has appointed B. Manickam Tagore as the new president of its Tamil Nadu unit, succeeding K Selvaperunthagai. This announcement was made on Saturday by K.C. Venugopal, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Tagore’s appointment is effective immediately as the party prepares for forthcoming political challenges in the region.

The statement released by the AICC acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing president, K Selvaperunthagai, commending his service during his tenure. Tagore, who is currently serving as a Lok Sabha MP from Virudhunagar, also holds the position of Congress whip in the Lok Sabha and is in charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Significance Of The Appointment

This leadership transition is timely for the Congress in Tamil Nadu, especially as the party operates within a ruling alliance led by actor and politician Vijay Joseph’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Over the past year, Tagore has publicly expressed concerns regarding the Congress being perceived as a minor partner within the alliance, which has elevated his profile within the party and the political landscape of the state.

This appointment comes at a strategic moment, placing Tagore in a pivotal role as the Congress navigates its organizational strategies and collaborations in the state. It remains to be seen how this change will influence the party’s future prospects in Tamil Nadu.

Tagore’s elevation is expected to bring new dynamics to the Congress’s approach in Tamil Nadu, with a focus on reinforcing its position and addressing the challenges it faces in the political arena.

Manickam Tagore’s Political Journey

B. Manickam Tagore was born on June 1, 1975, in Sivaganga district. He pursued his education at Bangalore University, where he obtained a BA LLB degree. Tagore became actively involved in politics through the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a student wing of the Congress Party. His political career began in 1994 when he served as the district general secretary of the NSUI.

Throughout the years, Tagore has held various prominent positions within the NSUI, eventually becoming the state general secretary in 1996, the national general secretary in 1997, and the vice-president in 1999. From 2003 to 2005, he was the general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress, further solidifying his standing within the party.

His organisational contributions include being appointed as the chairman of the Central Election Authority in 2006 and serving as the Election Commissioner of the Indian Youth Congress in 2008. These roles have not only enhanced his experience in party functions but also equipped him with the skills necessary for effective leadership.

Tagore’s appointment is seen as a significant move for the Congress as he brings a wealth of experience and an understanding of youth politics, which could prove beneficial for the party’s strategies in the coming months. It is expected that his leadership will contribute positively to the party’s image and performance in Tamil Nadu.
