CM Vijay’s Surprise Chennai Hostel Visit Exposes Worms in Food and Security Lapses

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a surprise visit on 18th July 2026, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay encountered several grievances from students at the MC Raja Social Justice Hostel in Saidapet, Chennai. Notably, students reported finding worms and bugs in their meals, raising alarming questions about hygiene standards in the kitchen. Allegations were made about kitchen staff not adhering to basic safety protocols, such as wearing gloves and hair coverings while handling food.

The complaints regarding food quality were only the beginning. Students expressed significant dissatisfaction with the overall meal preparation process, stating that numerous instances of contamination had occurred. They emphasised the need for immediate intervention to ensure the maintenance of acceptable health and safety standards.

Allegations of Misconduct and Security Lapses

In addition to issues with food, students reported alleged inappropriate behaviour by some of the hostel wardens. Residents claimed that interactions with the wardens often turned disrespectful, compounding an already challenging living situation. Furthermore, concerns were raised about unidentified individuals, described as rowdy elements, reportedly entering the premises and intimidating residents.

Students also highlighted the potential dangers posed by lax security measures in the hostel. Despite the institution being expected to have a total of 64 CCTV cameras, students claimed that only a fraction were operational. This lack of effective surveillance reportedly contributed to a feeling of unease among the hostel residents.

Furthermore, students voiced complaints about the hostel’s strict closing hours, which they argued were detrimental to those studying for competitive examinations like the UPSC. They alleged that wardens would not grant access to the hostel for latecomers, forcing some students to find shelter in nearby parks rather than risk being locked out for the night.

Insufficient Facilities and Poor Maintenance Practices

Sanitation also emerged as a pressing issue, as students noted that bathrooms and restrooms frequently had broken fixtures and often went uncleaned. This lack of proper maintenance not only affected daily living conditions but also contributed to the overall dissatisfaction expressed by residents regarding the hostel facilities.

In addition to hygiene concerns, students reported that sports facilities were consistently locked despite being available for their use. This restriction was viewed as a disservice to the students, who were eager to engage in physical activity and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

After listening to the various complaints, CM Vijay committed to addressing the issues raised by the students. He instructed the relevant officials to take immediate action on the concerns voiced during the visit. To ensure a candid discussion, Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu disclosed that the department had been made aware of the Chief Minister’s visit only ten minutes before his arrival, leaving officials without time to prepare responses.
