Class 10 Student Assaulted by Classmates in Jharkhand

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Class 10 student in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district was reportedly assaulted by a group of his classmates over a minor disagreement linked to an online payment. The alleged attack occurred on the night of July 14 at PM SHRI Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, within the Nirsa Police Station jurisdiction. The incident has attracted attention following the circulation of a video that documented the assault.

According to the victim, Sumit Kumar Das, a resident of Nagakyari village in Govindpur, the conflict stemmed from a financial transaction. The video footage allegedly shows him in distress while being threatened and abused by fellow students. Reports indicate that the assailants recorded the incident and shared it on social media, further complicating the scenario by reportedly threatening Sumit if he disclosed the abuse.

The incident prompted the school’s administration to form an inquiry committee aimed at investigating the matter and ensuring that appropriate action is taken against those guilty of violence. The implications of this event have raised significant concerns about student welfare at the institution.

Details of the Assault

As per a complaint lodged by Sumit’s parents, around 2 am, a group of five to six classmates allegedly bound his hands and feet with rope and struck him repeatedly with belts. The family further claimed that during the assault, the student was stripped and verbally abused. Reports also suggest that he was forced to consume a liquid from a bottle, intensifying the severity of the allegations against the assailants.

Initially, Sumit refrained from disclosing the details of the incident, reportedly due to fear of retaliation. However, as his physical condition deteriorated over the next two days, he eventually confided in his family about the incident. His parents promptly informed the school’s authorities before taking him for medical treatment.

Sumit was first admitted to the Pandra Sub-Health Centre and subsequently referred to the Shahid Nirmal Mahato Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad for further treatment.

School Administration’s Response

CK Yadav, a representative of the school administration, stated that students are prohibited from possessing mobile phones on campus, although some parents might circumvent this rule. He acknowledged that a committee has been established to investigate the incident thoroughly and that disciplinary action will be pursued against the students involved in the assault.

Yadav also assured that adequate security measures are implemented at the school and hostel, supplemented by CCTV surveillance. However, he noted that cameras are not installed within classrooms to uphold privacy standards, which has raised questions regarding student safety and oversight within the residential setting.

The incident has elicited broader concerns regarding the safety protocols in place for students in residential schools. The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations, while the inquiry by the school administration is expected to elucidate accountability and recommend suitable measures for addressing the issue.
