The CSR Journal Magazine

A jawan of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been apprehended following an alleged attempt to sexually assault a ten-year-old girl in West Bengal. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in the West Burdwan district, specifically near the Lal Bazar area which is close to a CISF camp. As reported, the girl had gone to collect raw mangoes with another child in the vicinity of residential quarters.

According to local eyewitnesses, the two girls, aged five and ten, were in the area when the accused, identified as Ramakant Vishwakarma, aged 40, is said to have approached them. He reportedly enticed the children by offering additional mangoes and subsequently took them on his scooter to a nearby location. While the younger girl was allegedly made to wait outside, the older girl was taken inside, where the attempted assault occurred.

The girl reportedly raised an alarm during the altercation, prompting the accused to flee the scene on his scooter. This incident quickly gained traction within the community as news spread, resulting in a significant public outcry.

Community Response

In reaction to the incident, local residents gathered outside the CISF camp to voice their anger, leading to protests and a blockade on the road. Demonstrators at Shitalpur Gate No. 3 insisted that they would continue their protest until the suspect was apprehended. The local community expressed outrage, demanding justice for the young victim.

The girl’s father, in conjunction with local Trinamool Congress (TMC) trade union leader Ratan Masih, formally reported the incident at the Saktoria police outpost. The complaint initiated a swift response from law enforcement, demonstrating the community’s determination to address the crime effectively.

Police officials indicated that they acted rapidly, managing to detain the accused within hours of the incident, leading to his eventual arrest. A case was filed under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, reinforcing the seriousness with which such allegations are treated.

Official Statements and Ongoing Investigation

Local TMC leader Chandan Acharya noted that tensions escalated in the aftermath of the incident, threatening community peace. However, he commended the prompt action taken by the police in ensuring that the accused was located and arrested swiftly. Officials clarified that Vishwakarma was not involved in election-related duties and was serving in a regular capacity associated with coal mining operations in the region.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are actively gathering more information to establish the facts surrounding the case in order to ensure justice for the victim. The handling of this situation by law enforcement has been closely monitored by the community, reflecting a heightened awareness around issues of child safety and security.

The case also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges related to safety for children in various communities, as residents remain vigilant and supportive of measures aimed at preventing such incidents from recurring. The commitment to justice in this incident underscores the community’s resolve to protect its most vulnerable members.
