Chhattisgarh: Drunk Truck Driver Allegedly Kills Girl and Leads Police on Prolonged Chase

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred on Friday in Chhattisgarh’s Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki when a 12-year-old girl named Poonam was killed by a truck allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver. The unfortunate event unfolded in Gunderdehi village, where witnesses reported that the speeding vehicle struck the girl as she was on the road. Eyewitnesses indicated that instead of stopping to render assistance, the driver chose to flee the scene.

Police Pursuit and Escalation of Events

Following the incident, local law enforcement launched an extensive pursuit of the runaway truck. Acting quickly, police established barricades outside the Mohla police station in an effort to intercept the vehicle. However, the driver reportedly collided with another truck parked near the police station and continued to evade authorities by smashing through the barricades, continuing his reckless journey towards Manpur.

As the pursuit intensified, police set up another checkpoint near the SDM office in Manpur. Despite the officers’ repeated attempts to halt the vehicle, the driver allegedly charged through the barricades yet again, dragging them along as he entered the town area on the National Highway. Fortunately, police personnel stationed behind the barricades managed to evade injury moments before the truck barreled through.

The chase extended onto the National Highway, moving towards the Maharashtra border. Officials suggested that the driver seemed intent on escaping into the neighbouring state. Near Korkotti village, however, the truck lost control and veered off the road, providing police with the opportunity to apprehend the driver. Sustaining injuries during the chaos, he was subsequently transported to Manpur Hospital for medical care.

Community Reaction and Aftermath of the Incident

The death of Poonam evoked strong reactions from the community in Gunderdehi village. Outraged residents and members of the victim’s family responded by placing the girl’s body on the road and blocking traffic on the state highway for nearly two hours. This protest underscored the community’s demand for justice and accountability in light of the incident.

Following discussions between local protesters and senior administrative and police officials, the blockade was lifted after assurances were made to the family regarding appropriate actions. In the wake of the incident, police ensured that the body was sent for a post-mortem examination prior to being handed over to the grieving family.

In operational follow-up, the truck involved in the tragic accident has been confiscated by authorities. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway, with police seeking to establish the full details of what transpired before and after the accident.
