The CSR Journal Magazine

The latest results from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) indicate a decrease in the Class 12 pass percentage, which now stands at 85.20 per cent. This figure reflects a drop of 3.19 percentage points from last year’s pass percentage of 88.39 per cent. School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar acknowledged this downturn as a consequence of modifications made to the assessment scheme used this year.

From a total of 17,80,365 students who registered for the examination, 17,68,968 students participated, resulting in 15,07,109 students successfully passing the exam. This year also marked the complete implementation of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for evaluating Class 12 answer sheets, with 98,66,622 answer scripts being assessed digitally, representing the largest OSM undertaking to date.

Kumar noted the change in assessment methodology contributed to the variations in pass percentages but urged students not to be disheartened. He extended his congratulations to those who performed well, while encouraging others to maintain a positive outlook despite the results.

Gender-wise Performance Highlights

In terms of gender performance, girls once again surpassed boys in the examinations. The pass percentage among female candidates was recorded at 88.86 per cent, while boys achieved a pass percentage of 82.13 per cent, marking a substantial gap of 6.73 percentage points. Additionally, transgender candidates achieved an impressive 100 per cent pass rate.

Among various regions, Trivandrum emerged as the leading area with a pass percentage of 95.62 per cent, followed by Chennai and Bengaluru at 93.84 per cent and 93.19 per cent, respectively. The remaining top five regions included Vijayawada with 92.77 per cent and Delhi West at 92.34 per cent.

In contrast, Prayagraj recorded the lowest pass percentage of 72.43 per cent, followed closely by Patna at 74.45 per cent. Noida and Bhopal reported pass percentages of 79.02 per cent and 79.43 per cent, respectively. The overall pass percentage for Delhi stood at 91.97 per cent, with Delhi West and East at 92.34 per cent and 91.73 per cent, respectively.

Increase in Participating Schools and Examination Centres

The number of schools that participated in the CBSE Class 12 examinations has observed a significant increase, rising from 19,299 last year to 19,967 this year. Similar growth was seen in the examination centres, which rose from 7,330 to 7,573.

Moreover, CBSE highlighted that the digitalisation of the evaluation process has minimised manual errors and enhanced efficiency. The introduction of OSM is said to have improved the secrecy and transparency of the evaluation process while aligning with reforms outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP).

This digital initiative has facilitated remote evaluation without the need for physical transportation of answer sheets, thus streamlining the overall evaluation process. The board conveyed that this approach aligns with its commitment to enhancing educational standards and methodologies.
