CBSE Announces Eligibility and Procedure for Second Board Exam 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

CBSE has made its guidelines clear regarding who can apply for the second board examination. Not all students are eligible; specific criteria must be met. The official notice from the board outlines several categories of students who may apply. These include students who have appeared in a minimum of three subjects during the first examination and those who have successfully completed Class 10 but wish to enhance their marks in up to three subjects.

Furthermore, students placed in the Compartment category and those from the 2025 Compartment batch will also be allowed to participate. Sports students, who received permission from the board, as well as students classified under UFM Category 1, may also apply if they meet other eligibility requirements. It is important to note that subjects available for improvement are limited to Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages.

However, students who did not appear for a minimum of three subjects in the initial examination or those in the ER category will not be permitted to take the second exam. This framework is intended to provide certain students another opportunity within the same academic year while managing exam-related stress.

Application Process for the Second Board Exam

To apply for the second board examination, schools are responsible for submitting the List of Candidates (LOC) for eligible students. According to CBSE guidelines, schools must complete the LOC submission in phases, and principals should assist students and parents with understanding the eligibility criteria, fee payments, and the timeline for application.

The official schedule for application submissions has been specified in the CBSE notice. The first phase for LOC submission spans from 18 March 2026 to 31 March 2026, immediately followed by a five-day window for the processing of exam fee payments. Subsequent phases will occur shortly after the declaration of results, ensuring a structured timeline for all necessary submissions.

Locally, submissions must be made before 11:59:59 PM on the last working day, as outlined in the schedule. This meticulous structure aims to facilitate a seamless application process for both students and educational institutions, ensuring that key information is consistently communicated.

Fees and Examination Schedule Overview

The fee for appearing in the second board exam is set at Rs 320 per subject, totalling Rs 960 for three subjects. Notably, no changes will be allowed in personal data such as names or dates of birth between the two examinations. Additionally, subject changes will be restricted unless specifically permitted under board policy regarding Mathematics.

Furthermore, the LOC is final; no new names may be added, and internal assessments cannot be modified since it is a continuous evaluation process throughout the academic year. This will help maintain uniformity in the evaluation process for all candidates.

The second board exam is scheduled to commence in May 2026, with a tentative schedule indicating examination timings from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Specific subjects are listed, and dates range from 15 May 2026 to 1 June 2026, providing ample opportunity for eligible students to demonstrate their academic abilities.

Students are encouraged to remain in contact with their respective schools for the LOC submissions, as these are managed through the educational institution rather than directly by the students. This examination aims to offer a better chance of improving academic performance and alleviating the pressures associated with a single examination approach within the same academic year.
