The ongoing protests concerning the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) have been described by Tamil Nadu BJP Spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy as a conspiracy conducted by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and opposition leaders. On July 22, Thirupathy asserted that these protests were intended to disrupt crucial legislative discussions during the current Monsoon Session of Parliament. He alleged that the opposition was using student concerns as a cover for their political agenda.

Speaking to ANI, Thirupathy emphasised that the protests created unnecessary distractions during a time when vital bills were on the agenda. He suggested that the actions of the CJP and the opposition were a deliberate attempt to destabilise the functioning of the government. According to him, the current government has taken significant steps regarding re-examinations and future procedural actions concerning NEET.

Thirupathy condemned the actions of the protestors, claiming that they had engaged in vandalism and disrupted public order. His remarks highlighted the alleged involvement of those opposing government policies in creating chaos at a critical time for the legislative body.

Response to Police Action During Protests

The police response to the NEET protests has also been a point of contention. Thirupathy justified the actions taken by law enforcement, noting that several journalists and police personnel were reportedly injured during the demonstrations. He stated that the level of violence exhibited by the protestors warranted a strong police presence to maintain order.

According to Thirupathy, the disturbances included the destruction of public property, further necessitating police intervention. He reiterated his belief that this situation was part of a larger scheme orchestrated by the opposition and CJP, asserting that such actions should be condemned unequivocally.

The protests had escalated to a point where law enforcement was compelled to intervene forcefully, leading to heightened tensions in the area. Images and reports emerging from the protests indicated instances of clashes between protestors and the police, which added to the overall unrest surrounding the issue.

Critique of Opposition Leaders’ Actions

In his statements, Narayanan Thirupathy also directed criticism towards the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, regarding his participation in the protests. He characterised Gandhi’s actions as “unruly” and suggested that they reflected poorly on his role as the Leader of the Opposition. He accused Gandhi of exploiting public protests for political gain rather than genuinely addressing the concerns of the students.

Gandhi, along with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition figures, had faced detention during their protests near Lok Kalyan Marg in Delhi. The Congress party was advocating for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, amid rising tensions surrounding NEET. Reports indicated that the police responded with force, which raised significant backlash from opposition leaders.

On July 20, the CJP had initiated a ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest in the national capital, which drew police action. Opposition leaders have expressed outrage over the police’s handling of the situation, categorising it as excessive and unprovoked. The ongoing climate of discontent continues to reflect significant divides between the ruling party and opposition factions within Parliament.
