Assam BJP legislator Mrinal Saikia has brought to light the serious repercussions of persistent flooding in Assam, which has considerably affected rural communities and agricultural activities. In statements made to ANI in Guwahati on July 27, the MLA stressed that the devastation caused by the floods extends beyond tangible losses and affects the very foundation of the agrarian economy.

Saikia articulated that while immediate emergency assistance is now underway, the losses encompass not just physical assets but also lives and livelihoods essential for the rural population. He pointed specifically to the negative impact on livestock and poultry farming, which are crucial for the sustenance of many families in various districts across the state.

Consequently, Saikia urged both central and state authorities to move beyond mere immediate relief and provide direct financial compensation for those whose livelihoods have been severely disrupted. He noted, “The flood has completely shattered the economies of several districts, especially in areas reliant on cattle rearing and poultry farming.”

State and Central Governments Assess Relief and Rehabilitation Efforts

Recent reports indicate that the toll from the floods in Assam has neared 68 fatalities, as per the latest bulletin from the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that ministers will be deployed across flood-affected areas to coordinate rehabilitation efforts in a systematic manner.

The Chief Minister also reaffirmed that restoring essential services, such as power supply, is prioritised. Assam Power Distribution Co. Ltd has been conducting safety inspections while initiating phased power restorations in districts like Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, and Dhubri. Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to returning normalcy in the affected regions promptly.

With the situation evolving, there have been assurances from other government officials regarding the seriousness of the flood crisis. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the circumstances in Assam as “very serious” while noting that both the central and state governments are working collaboratively on relief and rescue operations.

Prime Minister Monitoring the Flood Situation Closely

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively engaging with Assam’s Chief Minister to stay informed on the ongoing flood situation. According to Sonowal, the Prime Minister has maintained close communication, demonstrating the Central Government’s involvement in addressing the needs of the affected populations.

Sonowal detailed an interaction where the Prime Minister sought updates on the ground situation and reassured Assam’s residents of continued support from the Centre. Emphasising a coordinated response, he noted that a high-level inter-ministerial team has been dispatched to gather firsthand accounts from those impacted and to assess their conditions.

The collaborative efforts between the state and central authorities indicate a unified approach to managing the crisis. Both agencies have been distributing relief material and executing rescue operations as part of a strategic response to this natural calamity.
