Apple Unveils iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate at WWDC 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has officially announced the launch of iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) held in 2026. These updates for iPhones and MacBooks introduce several improvements that aim to enhance user experience. Key features include enhanced performance, advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, a revamped Siri AI, and updated parental controls.

The updates are currently available in their beta versions, and Apple has indicated that the complete versions will be offered as free downloads later in the year. As the release date approaches, Apple has outlined the compatibility for its devices, making it crucial for users to determine if their models will support these updates.

For iPhone users, Apple continues to support devices starting from the iPhone 11 series. Consequently, users with an iPhone 11 or newer will be eligible to install iOS 27 when it becomes available in the fall. This decision reflects Apple’s commitment to providing long-term support for its devices.

New Features in iOS 27

iOS 27 not only extends support to the second-generation iPhone SE and newer models but also focuses on improving everyday tasks rather than making drastic visual changes. The update promises enhancements such as quicker app launches, faster photo processing, and improved AirDrop speeds, building on the Liquid Glass design introduced in the previous version.

A significant addition to the software update is the next-generation Siri AI, which is designed to operate on the principles of Apple Intelligence. The assistant can now comprehend personal context, search through messages, emails, and photos, and provide answers relevant to what is displayed on the screen. Furthermore, it can gather updated information from the internet.

To enhance user engagement, Apple is introducing a dedicated Siri app, enabling users to review and continue previous conversations across their devices through iCloud synchronisation. This feature is expected to improve the overall functionality and personalisation of Siri.

macOS Golden Gate Compatibility and Features

Transitioning to macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple has decided to discontinue support for Intel-based Macs. This shift had been anticipated based on previous communications indicating that macOS Tahoe would be the last significant release for Intel models. Users will now require an Apple silicon-powered Mac for the latest macOS updates.

Eligible Macs will include those equipped with Apple’s M-series chips, such as M1, M2, M3, and M4 models. However, several Intel Macs previously compatible with macOS Tahoe will not receive this year’s update, including the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019) and the recent 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) with four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Apple has confirmed that these older Intel Macs will still receive security updates for macOS Tahoe but will miss out on the new features offered by Golden Gate. Additionally, macOS Golden Gate expands parental controls and Screen Time tools, introducing new features for child account setup and contact management.

Developers can currently access iOS 27 Developer Beta 1, with a public beta slated for release next month. The testing process has commenced, promising that users of Apple’s eligible devices will be able to experience the newest software offerings later this year.
