A heated exchange between Congress and government representatives unfolded regarding the recent student protests and alleged education paper leaks. Rahul Gandhi, a key Congress MP, charged the government with failing to protect students’ interests. In response, Union Health Minister JP Nadda asserted that the opposition was exploiting student concerns for political advantage rather than genuinely addressing their issues.

Gandhi highlighted that over the last decade, there have been 152 reported paper leaks affecting 7.5 crore students and their families. He condemned police actions against peaceful protesters advocating for education reforms, stating that these issues were harming both middle-class and underprivileged families heavily invested in their children’s education.

At a press conference following the Congress-led protest in New Delhi, Gandhi expressed deep concerns about the state of the educational system, which he described as “rigged”. He urged the government to address the protests, stating that it is unjust for security forces to confront peaceful demonstrators demanding accountability and transparency within the education sector.

Government Response and Call for Discussion

Responding to Gandhi’s statements, Nadda indicated that the government would thoroughly investigate the claims regarding paper leaks. He offered to engage in an open dialogue in Parliament, inviting the opposition to participate in discussions on the matter. Nadda stressed the necessity of collaboration in addressing these challenges effectively.

During his address, Nadda highlighted the government’s readiness for an in-depth discussion, suggesting that the opposition could dictate the length of the debate. He called for a concerted effort from all political parties to foster a constructive resolution to the issues plaguing the education sector.

Offering preliminary insights, Nadda mentioned that the administration recognises the significance of the allegations made by Gandhi and will respond to each point transparently. He urged all stakeholders to focus on solutions rather than political rivalry, reinforcing the idea that the educational welfare of students is paramount.

Congress Accuses Education Minister of Incompetence

In a critical statement, Gandhi accused Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan of failing in his responsibilities, alleging that the minister’s actions have jeopardised India’s educational framework. He demanded Pradhan’s resignation and urged accountability for the police’s aggressive tactics against student protesters.

Gandhi further elaborated on the severe consequences of the education crisis, citing instances where students faced undue stress leading to tragic outcomes, including suicides. He reiterated that students are entitled to a fair educational experience and deserve respect from the authorities aimed at safeguarding their future.

Additionally, Gandhi called for accountability for police action against students during protests, insisting that those who ordered and executed the crackdown on peaceful demonstrations must be held responsible. He maintained that the educational system is a national asset requiring immediate restoration and protection.

Conversely, Nadda accused the Congress of selective engagement with educational issues, referencing alleged paper leaks in various states governed by Congress and its allies. He questioned why the opposition leader had not addressed these issues in regions where Congress held power, implying a lack of sincere commitment to student welfare.
