The recent decision by the Indian government to expand the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework to include solar ingots and wafers, effective from June 2028, aims to bolster India’s role in the international clean energy supply chain. Presently, China holds a dominant position in the market, accounting for a substantial share of the production of ingots, wafers, cells, and modules. To qualify for inclusion in ALMM List-III, manufacturers will need to demonstrate equivalent ingot production capabilities. This requirement is anticipated to stimulate backward integration and foster large-scale integrated manufacturing facilities. Consequently, the framework is likely to trigger significant investments throughout the solar manufacturing value chain, encompassing ingot, wafer, cell, and module production.

Industry stakeholders predict that this policy could facilitate the creation of numerous skilled jobs across various sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, quality control, and technology development, while also bolstering related industries.
