AIADMK Criticises Tamil Nadu Government for Passing Mekedatu Resolution Without Debate

The CSR Journal Magazine

The AIADMK has accused the Tamil Nadu government of bypassing established legislative procedures by passing a resolution on the Mekedatu project without adequate discussion in the Assembly, triggering a fresh political confrontation over the contentious Cauvery river issue.

In a strongly worded statement, the opposition party alleged that the resolution was introduced and passed in a hurried manner without proper deliberation, arguing that the move undermined the dignity and traditions of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

AIADMK Questions Handling of Resolution

The party said the Assembly occupies a unique position in the state’s democratic framework and claimed that recent proceedings had failed to uphold long-standing legislative conventions.

According to the AIADMK, the resolution concerning the Mekedatu project was passed without sufficient debate, amounting to a violation of procedural norms governing House business.

The party described the measure as a “hastily inserted” and “negligently handled” resolution, alleging that members were not given adequate opportunity to deliberate on an issue of significant public importance.

Cauvery Dispute Remains Central Concern

The controversy centres on Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam and reservoir project across the Cauvery River, which has long been opposed by Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu has consistently maintained that the project could affect downstream water flows and have adverse consequences for irrigation and agricultural activities in the state.

The AIADMK argued that any new institutional arrangement or proposal connected to the project could potentially weaken the legal safeguards secured by Tamil Nadu through years of litigation over Cauvery water sharing.

The party warned against measures that, in its view, could dilute existing mechanisms established through tribunal awards and subsequent judicial interventions governing the distribution of Cauvery waters.

Reference to Earlier Cauvery Milestones

The opposition party also highlighted developments achieved during previous AIADMK administrations in relation to the Cauvery dispute.

It noted that the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was notified in the Gazette during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The party further pointed out that the Cauvery Management Authority was established during the AIADMK government led by former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

According to the AIADMK, these milestones were achieved after prolonged legal efforts and should not be undermined by any parallel framework or initiative.

Criticism Extends to Assembly Proceedings

Beyond the Mekedatu issue, the AIADMK alleged that standards of conduct within the Assembly had deteriorated under the present government.

The party claimed that recent exchanges between the opposition and Chief Minister reflected a decline in legislative decorum and accountability.

It also raised concerns regarding the government’s handling of issues such as law and order, power outages and industrial incidents, alleging that satisfactory responses were not provided during Assembly discussions.

Escalating its criticism, the AIADMK accused the government of prioritising political messaging over substantive debate and alleged that important governance issues were being overshadowed by theatrics inside the House.

The party urged the ruling dispensation to focus on public concerns and take steps to restore what it described as the “dignity and discipline” of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
