The Formula 1 return to India has gained momentum with the Sports Ministry granting provisional recognition to the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) as a National Sports Federation (NSF). This pivotal move is aimed at enhancing coordination between the government and the governing body for motorsport in the nation. The recognition was confirmed in an order issued on July 23, following discussions regarding the roadmap for reviving Formula 1 in India by 2028.

According to the order, the FMSCI’s provisional recognition will come into effect immediately. The Sports Ministry underscored the requirement for the federation to align its constitution with the stipulations of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. This marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to develop motorsport and draw F1 back to Indian circuits after over a decade of absence.

The Sports Ministry has stipulated that this recognition is conditional. It mandates compliance with governance, financial regulations, and anti-doping norms. If FMSCI fails to meet these standards or misrepresentation is discovered, the recognition may be rescinded, reflecting the government’s serious commitment to ensuring transparency and integrity within the sport.

Formation of Dedicated Task Force

As efforts progress towards the revival of Formula 1 in India, the Sports Ministry and FMSCI have been collaborating closely to outline a strategic roadmap. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has announced the establishment of a dedicated Task Force to critically assess the feasibility of hosting premier motorsport events in India. This task force will comprise representatives from the Sports Ministry, FMSCI, the Uttar Pradesh government, and the proprietors of the Buddh International Circuit located in Greater Noida.

This panel is tasked with evaluating necessary infrastructure, operational hurdles, and the potential economic, tourism, and investment impacts of hosting Formula 1 events. Minister Mandaviya has articulated a clear ambition to bring Formula 1 back to India by the year 2028, demonstrating the government’s proactive approach to reviving this high-profile motorsport.

Previous attempts to resume Formula 1 races in India had stalled due to various challenges, including financial difficulties and taxation issues. With this focused initiative, the government appears to be more determined than ever to establish a more permanent presence for Formula 1 within the Indian sporting landscape.

Growing Interest in Formula 1 Among Indian Fans

India previously hosted Formula 1 races from 2011 to 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit. However, the absence of the event from the racing calendar has sparked numerous discussions about a potential return. Recently, there has been a notable increase in interest, reflecting Formula One’s rising popularity across the country. The fanbase in India has surged from 79 million in December last year to 98 million within a span of six months, signalling a significant boost in the sport’s appeal.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has acknowledged the importance of India to the championship, indicating that a return is contingent upon securing adequate commercial investment and fostering local partnerships. The increasing viewership and engagement with the sport suggest that the Indian market is evolving into a critical element for Formula One’s global strategy.

As the collaboration between the Sports Ministry and FMSCI intensifies, the prospects for hosting Formula 1 events in India seem more favourable than they have in years.
