Bahrain activated its sirens on the morning of July 24, 2026, warning residents to seek shelter after detecting fire in the area. This directive came just hours after the US military announced its completion of the thirteenth consecutive night of military strikes against Iran. The recent escalation in military actions has prompted Gulf states to remain vigilant, particularly due to ongoing conflicts surrounding the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The conflict has reportedly extended beyond just the Strait of Hormuz. On July 23, Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are allegedly backed by Iran, announced they had targeted two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and threatened another critical shipping route. This has raised alarms in the region as tensions continue to mount, coinciding with a notable rise in Brent crude oil prices, which increased by over six per cent, reaching approximately $100 a barrel.

In addition to developments concerning Bahrain and Yemen, explosive incidents were recorded on Qeshm Island in Iran, known for housing naval assets like drone boats. Reports from Iranian state media confirmed that four individuals lost their lives, while five others sustained injuries in a US missile strike near Ahvaz on the banks of the Karun River.

US Strikes Aim To Maintain Maritime Security

The US Central Command stated that the latest series of strikes was aimed at degrading Iran’s capacity to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels operating in regional waters. These military actions concluded shortly before 5 am local time on Friday, July 24, 2026. The US has consistently declared its intent to re-establish control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which plays a significant role in global oil transport.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi visited Tehran on July 23 to advocate for peace and dialogue amid rising tensions. His office indicated that he assured Iran that Iraqi territory would not be used to stage attacks against it. Iraq maintains close diplomatic relations with both the US and Iran, highlighting its unique position in the current geopolitical landscape.

As part of the ongoing threats from the Houthis, they have indicated intentions to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. This strait serves as a critical link between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with about twelve per cent of global trade passing through it, which includes a significant portion of container traffic between Europe and Asia via Egypt’s Suez Canal.

Geopolitical Implications and Responses

The Houthi assaults are reportedly jeopardising the flow of oil shipments from Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu port, leading to a compounded disruption alongside the ongoing issues in the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime data analysis from Lloyd’s List Intelligence suggested that Saudi Arabia has rerouted millions of barrels per day of oil exports through an overland pipeline to Yanbu amid these escalating tensions.

While US officials, including former President Donald Trump, have issued warnings of “major military punishment” for further Houthi attacks on shipping, tensions in the region remain unresolved. Iran has asserted its right to manage traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and mentioned its intention to implement fees in the previously toll-free passage, complicating the already volatile situation.

Additionally, Trump announced that funds held by the US related to Iran would be allocated to cover damages incurred by ongoing conflicts involving ships and cargo. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi vehemently opposed this assertion, cautioning that normalising such asset confiscations could lead to widespread instability. With Bahrain’s sirens wailing, fresh strikes unfolding in Iran, and both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb under threat, regional security and international trade routes face increasing pressure.
