Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to ensure thorough preparations for the Kanwar Yatra, set to start on July 30. During a high-level meeting in Haridwar, he emphasised the importance of the event for both the devotees and the state’s administrative capabilities. The Chief Minister stated that the safety and convenience of pilgrims must remain a top priority as they undertake this significant religious journey.

Dhami highlighted that the objective of the state government is to create a “Safe Kanwar, Well-Organised Kanwar, and Clean Kanwar.” The Chief Minister urged departments to finalise their arrangements ahead of time to prevent any oversights. To facilitate the influx of devotees, he instructed officials to enhance hospitality and set up community kitchens along the route.

Moreover, he called for the installation of clean pink toilets, specifically catering to female devotees, at strategic locations, ensuring their comfort during the pilgrimage.

Anticipated Influx of Pilgrims and Security Measures

Dhami noted the substantial increase in pilgrim numbers, with over 4.5 million visitors having undertaken the Char Dham Yatra in 2023 alone. He mentioned that the state is bracing for even greater numbers during the Kanwar Yatra. With this surge, the Chief Minister highlighted the need for bolstered arrangements while preserving the traditions associated with the event.

The Chief Minister asked for enhanced security measures, including the deployment of extra police personnel in sensitive areas, as well as the use of CCTV cameras and drones for surveillance. He insisted on proactive strategies to maintain law and order, instructing authorities to monitor social media platforms actively to avoid the spread of misinformation and potential disturbances.

Additionally, he emphasised the implementation of a traffic management plan that would address the needs of both pilgrims and local residents, ensuring minimal disruption. Dhami underscored that VIP movements should not interfere with the pilgrimage process.

Health and Sanitation Arrangements for Devotees

The Chief Minister also focused on health services, directing the establishment of medical camps and the availability of ambulances and paramedical staff at critical points along the route. Provisions for drinking water, sanitation facilities, and cleanliness were also emphasised to maintain a high standard for pilgrims.

He called for regular sanitation drives and the reinforcement of a no-plastic initiative, aiming to restore the area to its original state following the Yatra. Dhami also instructed officials to rigorously inspect food quality at eating establishments to ensure safety and hygiene for the devotees.

During the meeting, Dhami stressed the need for ongoing communication between various departments throughout the event. He suggested that control rooms and helplines should operate around the clock while district magistrates and senior police superintendents monitor the situation daily and resolve issues as they arise.

Future Preparations for Mahakumbh 2027

The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of seamless preparations for the upcoming Mahakumbh in 2027, ensuring that ongoing development works do not conflict with Kanwar Yatra arrangements. He emphasised the importance of effective coordination among various stakeholders to uphold Uttarakhand’s reputation for proficient event management.

Officials from Dehradun, Pauri, and Tehri participated in the meeting via video conferencing, providing updates on their respective preparations and reaffirming their commitment to a successful Kanwar Yatra. The concerted efforts from various departments aim to create a memorable experience for all pilgrims.
