X User Slammed for Mocking Lift Operator, Sparks Debate on Dignity of Work

The CSR Journal Magazine

An X user has received significant criticism online after ridiculing the job of a lift operator in a now-viral post that raised questions about the dignity of various professions. The user, identified as “Gabbar,” posted a photograph of the lift operator along with a question that asked whether this was “the dumbest job in the world,” accompanied by a laughing emoji. This comment incited a strong backlash from the online community, who rushed to defend the worker’s dignity and call out the user for their perceived insensitivity.

In response to Gabbar’s post, which attracted over four million views, users expressed their discontent, arguing that every honest profession deserves respect. One commenter highlighted the importance of not mocking anyone whose work contributes to their livelihood.

Another user sharply countered Gabbar’s remark by suggesting that posting negative comments online represented a far less meaningful activity. This view resonated with many, as commenters voiced the sentiment that no job is inherently inferior.

Community Supports Lift Operator

As the discussion progressed, several users emphasised the inherent value of all types of work. One individual stated, “When hunger hits, my friend, that is when we realise that no work is small or big.” This sentiment echoed throughout the comments, with many urging others to recognise the effort and time involved in various professions.

Moreover, some users pointed out that critics often underestimate the complexities of the lift operator’s role. A commenter noted that working as a lift operator involves more than merely sitting inside an elevator; it can be mentally demanding to manage this responsibility for six to eight hours each day.

Additionally, the importance of the role in assisting elderly individuals and those unfamiliar with elevator operations was highlighted. Critics may overlook the fact that lift operators play a crucial role in helping people navigate these systems, especially during peak hours.

Importance of Lift Operators in Public Spaces

Among the notable responses was a comprehensive post by X user Manasa Manjunath, who argued in favour of the necessity of lift operators in India. She recounted a recent experience at a mall in Kochi, where she encountered difficulties with other shoppers occupying elevators, despite the availability of escalators. Manjunath waited for approximately 15 minutes, and while some individuals made space, many others did not.

This experience led her to advocate for the need for lift operators, especially in crowded places where public courtesy often seems to be lacking. She drew a comparison to Bengaluru, where operators frequently prioritise elderly patrons and families, thus preventing similar scenarios.

Another commenter elaborated on the practical implications behind employing lift operators, particularly in older residential buildings. They noted that the elevator industry is primarily dominated by a few large companies, and that maintaining these systems can be costly. Employing lift operators, according to this user, is a cost-effective measure to prevent expensive maintenance issues, making the role vital for preservation of these services.

This ongoing discussion surrounding the dignity of various occupations suggests a broader societal movement against job-shaming, underscoring the importance of acknowledging the essential contributions of all workers.
