Who is Indian-origin NASA Astronaut Anil Menon Who Launched First ISS Mission Aboard Soyuz MS-29

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nasa astronaut Anil Menon, alongside Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, commenced their mission aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft from Kazakhstan. The spacecraft lifted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome at 8.17 pm IST on Monday, embarking on an eight-month journey to the International Space Station (ISS). Automatic docking with the ISS’s Prichal module is expected to occur at 11.56 pm IST following a three-hour period during which the spacecraft will orbit twice.

Mission Objectives and Scientific Research

This mission serves as Anil Menon’s inaugural spaceflight, while it marks the second for both Dubrov and Kikina. Upon arrival at the ISS, the team will join a diverse group of astronauts and cosmonauts, including Nasa astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway and Chris Williams, and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, among others. The crew is set to engage in various scientific endeavours aimed at enhancing human space exploration and providing insights beneficial for life on Earth.

During their time on the ISS, Menon will undertake research on the physiological impacts of long-duration spaceflight. He will investigate how microgravity influences blood flow, vein structure, and blood composition in astronauts. Menon is also tasked with testing technology to produce intravenous fluids using the station’s potable water system, a capability that will be crucial for future deep-space missions.

In addition to these studies, Menon will continue research focused on improving in-space production of semiconductor crystals. This work is vital for the large-scale manufacturing of components essential for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and medical devices. Furthermore, he will conduct ultrasound investigations employing augmented reality and artificial intelligence techniques, which could decrease reliance on medical support from Earth during future missions.

Personal Background and Career Path

Anil Menon, born in Minneapolis to Ukrainian and Indian immigrant parents, is an emergency medicine physician and a colonel in the US Space Force. His career includes frontline service in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom while serving with the US Air Force. He has also worked with the Himalayan Rescue Association, tending to climbers on Mount Everest. His father hails from Ottapalam in Kerala’s Palakkad district, while his mother immigrated from Ukraine to the US.

At 49 years old, Menon has a history of engagement with humanitarian efforts, including a year spent in India as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar focusing on polio vaccination initiatives. He joined Nasa in 2014 as a flight surgeon, transitioned to SpaceX in 2018 where he initiated the company’s medical programme and contributed to its initial human space flights and Starship, before being selected as a Nasa astronaut in December 2021. His training began the following month.

His wife, Anna, also an astronaut, completed her space mission in September 2024 on the Polaris Dawn mission facilitated by SpaceX, where she spent nearly five days in orbit. The current Soyuz mission represents a significant milestone for Menon, marking his first voyage into space and the commencement of an extensive eight-month stay aboard the ISS.
