WhatsApp Will Discontinue Support for Older Android Phones Starting September 8

The CSR Journal Magazine

WhatsApp is set to cease its support for older Android devices as of September 8, 2026. This decision aligns with the company’s goal of updating system requirements and enhancing performance standards. Currently, WhatsApp is compatible with devices operating on Android version 5.0 and above; however, the forthcoming features necessitate an upgrade to a minimum of Android 6.0.

The change specifically affects smartphones that use Android 5.0 and Android 5.1. Following the cutoff date, users of these devices will no longer be able to access the app. This move is indicative of the ongoing evolution within the app development landscape, where supporting outdated technology is becoming increasingly difficult.

To help users prepare for this transition, WhatsApp has begun issuing in-app notifications to those impacted by the changes. These alerts advise users to back up their chat histories prior to the termination of support, ensuring that they can preserve their data if they migrate to a compatible device in the future.

Implications for Users

The decision to withdraw support for older Android versions will primarily affect a sizeable yet distinct group of users, especially in regions like India, Brazil, and parts of Southeast Asia and Africa. In these areas, older smartphones still see significant usage, and many of these devices have ceased receiving software updates, limiting their capability to meet modern app requirements.

Users who wish to continue using WhatsApp will need to consider upgrading to a device operating on Android 6.0 or a newer version. This change encompasses both WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business, necessitating users of both applications to adhere to the new requirements.

It is essential to note that this update will not affect Apple users. iPhones running iOS 15.1 and newer versions, along with iPads on iPadOS 15.1 or later, will continue to support WhatsApp without any interruptions. This distinction highlights the varied impact of technology upgrades across different platforms.

New Features on the Horizon

In addition to the transition regarding older devices, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a feature aimed at enhancing user experience on Android phones. The company is working on introducing notification bubbles, a design already familiar to users of Facebook Messenger.

While the notification bubble feature is not yet available for beta testing, it is expected to transform how users manage chats on their devices. By allowing conversations to be viewed and responded to without leaving other applications, this feature aims to facilitate easier multitasking.

The integration of notification bubbles with the Android notification system is anticipated to provide a more seamless experience during conversations, encouraging greater efficiency when engaging with messages amidst various tasks on users’ devices.
