WhatsApp is launching a new feature that allows users to connect without disclosing their phone numbers. This development has prompted some experts to express caution regarding the possible misuse of usernames. Jasveer Singh, co-founder of KnotDating, highlighted fears that this could liken WhatsApp to Telegram, which has faced scrutiny over impersonators and scammers. He articulated concerns that the announcement of usernames may not prioritise user privacy but rather expose them to a range of security vulnerabilities.

Finfluencer Ankur Warikoo echoed similar sentiments, asserting that in a diverse country like India, inadequate anti-abuse measures could lead to significant problems. Warikoo illustrated the potential risks by imagining scenarios in which similar usernames could lead to impersonation and fraudulent solicitations for money. He stressed the need for robust safeguards to protect users from such threats, which could undermine the platform’s integrity.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the founder of Paytm, added to the dialogue, voicing apprehensions regarding the likelihood of users creating similar-sounding usernames to confuse or mislead others. He raised the prospect of verified usernames becoming a necessity as the feature unfolds, pushing for a more secure environment on the platform.

Creating and Managing Usernames on WhatsApp

To establish a username on WhatsApp, users can navigate to the account section within the app’s settings. Here, they will find an option to create or edit a username, which can comprise up to 35 characters. It is crucial for users to ensure they have the latest version of the app to access this feature. The option also includes a unique Username Key to further enhance privacy, providing additional control over who can initiate conversations.

WhatsApp clarified that the new feature does not include a searchable directory of usernames. This means others cannot browse for usernames; individuals can only connect if they know the exact username. This aspect is geared towards preserving user privacy and preventing unsolicited contact.

The Username Key functionality adds another layer of security. If activated, users will require a unique four-digit code in addition to the username before anyone can reach out. However, this key is turned off by default, allowing users the flexibility to manage their accessibility according to their preferences.

Safeguards and User Protection Measures in Place

While there are legitimate fears surrounding the potential for misuse of the username feature, WhatsApp maintains that the foundational principles of its service remain unchanged. Each account will still necessitate a phone number, ensuring that users cannot operate an account without it. This measure helps in restricting access to those genuinely registered on the platform.

To combat impersonation, WhatsApp has developed certain precautions. A username cannot be registered if it matches one already used on Facebook or Instagram, thereby reducing the risk of copycat user accounts. For those who desire the same username across platforms, linking their Instagram account is a requirement.

In addition, WhatsApp has declared that usernames associated with prominent figures will be reserved. This initiative serves to further mitigate impersonation risks and protect high-profile users from being misrepresented on the platform.

The rollout of the username feature will take place gradually globally over the coming months, and users can currently reserve their usernames in anticipation of the full launch. All updates aim to enhance functionality while prioritising user security and privacy.
