West Bengal Cabinet Approves Two Panels to Tackle Corruption and Crimes Against Women

The CSR Journal Magazine

The West Bengal Cabinet has agreed to set up two commissions aimed at combating issues of institutional corruption and violence against women, as announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on May 18. Both commissions are set to be led by retired judges from the Calcutta High Court and are scheduled to commence their work on June 1.

Justice Biswajeet Basu has been appointed to spearhead the Commission against Institutional Corruption, while Justice Samapti Chatterjee will chair the Commission on Atrocities Against Women. The structures are designed to address pressing societal issues and enhance the state’s accountability.

In his remarks, Chief Minister Adhikari underscored the government’s dedication to promoting transparency and safeguarding the rights of citizens. He highlighted that the formation of these commissions represents a significant step towards improving governance and addressing critical social challenges.

Chief Minister Engages with Citizens

On the same day as the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari held a ‘Janata Darbar’ at the BJP office in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, where he interacted directly with citizens. This initiative allowed him to listen to various grievances and concerns raised by community members.

During the session, Adhikari demonstrated his commitment to understanding the issues faced by the populace. He reiterated the government’s efforts to ensure that citizens’ voices are heard and that their problems are addressed effectively. This outreach event is part of the Chief Minister’s broader strategy to maintain close contact with the public.

Additionally, Adhikari’s engagement aligns with his administrative approach that prioritises community involvement in governance, aiming to foster a more inclusive atmosphere in the state’s political landscape.

Promotion of Bengali Culture

In a broader context, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also expressed aspirations for Bengali culture to regain its prominence on a global stage. He remarked on previous efforts that allegedly suppressed cultural identity and suggested that the people of West Bengal have liberated themselves from such constraints.

Through a recent post on social media platform X, Adhikari referenced historical figures and the rich cultural heritage of Bengal, linking it to the current goals of promoting regional identity. He noted that the contributions of luminaries like Rabindranath Tagore during the Bengal Renaissance should inspire renewed focus on local culture.

His remarks were made in conjunction with a post shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted aspects of Bengali culture during his international tour, particularly noting its presence in Sweden. This further signifies the government’s intention to showcase regional culture as part of India’s global identity.

The emphasis on cultural pride and initiatives to combat social issues suggests a multifaceted approach by the West Bengal government under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, reflecting both administrative and cultural aspirations for the state.
