Vice President CP Radhakrishnan has commenced a two-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is scheduled for August 8-9. He arrived at INS Utkrosh in Sri Vijaya Puram on August 8 and was warmly received by Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi (Retd.), the Lieutenant Governor of the region. The Vice President was greeted with ceremonial honours, which included a ceremonial Guard of Honour.

First Day Activities

On the first day of his visit, the Vice President has planned several engagements. He is set to visit the Cellular Jail National Memorial, a significant historical site in Sri Vijaya Puram. Here, he will pay homage at the Martyrs’ Column and offer respects at the Swatantrata Jyoti. Additionally, he will visit Veer Savarkar’s Cell, an area notable for its connection to India’s independence movement.

The Vice President is also scheduled to attend a Light and Sound Show that aims to capture the essence of India’s freedom struggle and honour the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. This show is expected to provide an enriching narrative, reinforcing the historical significance of the location and the broader story of independence.

Today’s itinerary reflects the Vice President’s commitment to engaging with the rich history of India’s fight for freedom, a theme that is further underscored by the visit’s timing ahead of the upcoming 80th Independence Day celebrations.

Participation in Independence Day Activities

On August 9, an important highlight of the visit includes the Vice President joining the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyaan’ initiative, during which he will hoist the National Flag at Flag Point in Sri Vijaya Puram. This event is part of a larger campaign aimed at encouraging patriotism and national pride as the nation approaches the anniversary of its independence.

Following the flag hoisting ceremony, the Vice President will attend a state function named “Tiranga Concert on Vande Mataram” at the Dr. BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) Auditorium. This concert is expected to feature performances that celebrate the spirit of nationalism and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s freedom.

In the afternoon, Vice President Radhakrishnan has plans to visit Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island. This island, historically significant as it was previously known as Ross Island, played a vital role in India’s struggle for independence. It is believed that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose visited this site in 1943, where he is said to have symbolically hoisted the tricolour flag over the Government House, marking a pivotal defiance against colonial rule.

Significance of the Visit

This visit has been strategically timed ahead of the 80th Independence Day observances on August 15. The event at the Red Fort is expected to attract around 24,000 attendees, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag and deliver an address to the nation. The day marks a significant milestone, celebrating the end of nearly two centuries of colonial dominion and the resultant restoration of sovereignty to the Indian populace.

The historical backdrop of this two-day visit highlights the transition towards nation-building initiated post-independence, reflecting democratic principles, unity, and the quest for self-determination.
