On August 5, Congress MP KC Venugopal raised concerns regarding the Centre’s willingness to engage with pressing public issues during a press conference in New Delhi. He specifically highlighted the “brutal assault” of protesting students by the Delhi police, alongside allegations of a donation embezzlement at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, termed “Chanda Chori.” Venugopal expressed discontent towards the government’s lack of responsiveness to these significant matters.

The Congress MP questioned the absence of accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, particularly regarding the police action against protestors on July 20 at Jantar Mantar. He expressed his outrage over the reported use of an “AK-47” during protests in Bihar, emphasising the urgent need for governmental transparency and action. “Why is the Home Minister running away from Parliament?” Venugopal pressed, demanding answers.

Venugopal condemned the government’s attitude, suggesting it reflects a disconnection from the voice of the people. He asserted that the current parliamentary deadlock was a result of the government’s refusal to engage with opposition demands. He reiterated that the Centre’s actions were a stark contrast to the democratic values upheld within the country.

Continuing Issues Ignored by the Government

In addition to the immediate concerns regarding police actions, Venugopal outlined several other significant matters which he claimed the government was neglecting. Issues such as ethanol blending policies and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir were cited as areas where discussions were evidently lacking. He reiterated the demand for a thorough inquiry into the Ram Mandir donations, questioning the absence of accountability in the matter.

Venugopal insisted that the government’s reluctance to discuss these topics highlighted a broader issue: an unwillingness to run the Parliament effectively. “The government is not ready to discuss any public issue we raised,” he stated, underscoring the importance of addressing citizen concerns within parliamentary discourse.

The ongoing monsoon session of Parliament has seen repeated adjournments, as opposition members demand the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss these pressing issues. Their absence, Venugopal claimed, represented a failure in governmental duty.

Opposition Protests Against Government Actions

Earlier on the same day, prominent opposition figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in a march from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar in Parliament. This protest aimed to draw attention to their grievances regarding the allegedly excessive use of force by police against the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) protestors on July 20. Allegations concerning the embezzlement of Ram Mandir donations were also spotlighted during this demonstration.

During her address to the media, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra demanded increased accountability from the central government concerning the police actions against student protestors. Vadra contended that public officials must assume full responsibility for orders that involve the use of force against citizens, particularly the youth. She reiterated the notion that India functions as a democracy, not a monarchy.

In her statements, Vadra sought clarity on the decisions that led to the use of lathi charges and pellet guns against demonstrators, positioning herself as an advocate for human rights and accountability in governance. The protest signifies ongoing tensions between the opposition and the current administration regarding civic rights and governmental conduct.
