The CSR Journal Magazine

A 32-year-old woman tragically passed away in unexplained circumstances at her matrimonial residence in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, just four months following her wedding. The deceased, identified as Sapna Sahu, is said to have faced harassment for dowry demands leading up to her untimely death. Authorities have since initiated an investigation and are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the definitive cause of her demise.

Allegations of Dowry Demands

Sapna Sahu, a resident of Nai Basti and married to Abhishek Sahu, who operates an artificial jewellery shop in Bisati Bazaar, wed on February 20 this year. Sapna’s brother, Satyendra Sahu, reported that their family provided approximately 1.5 kg of silver and 50 grams of gold jewellery, in addition to various household articles, as part of the marriage customs. Despite this, he has alleged that the groom’s family continued to voice dissatisfaction and made further requests for items such as an air conditioner and a gold chain.

According to Satyendra, Sapna had recently returned to her in-laws’ home on June 18 after visiting her parental family. He claimed that Sapna expressed feelings of unhappiness upon her return, indicating that her husband did not devote enough time to her and frequently voiced her discomfort in the household. On the night prior to her death, she reportedly contacted her brother, requesting assistance in returning to her parental home.

Following a family mourning ritual at the in-laws’ residence, her family planned to retrieve her the following day. However, on Sunday morning, Satyendra received an alarming call from his brother-in-law, stating that Sapna was “not speaking.” Upon arrival, the family discovered her lying unconscious on a bed and quickly took her to the government medical college, where she was pronounced dead.

Police Investigation and Family Complaint

In light of Sapna’s passing, her family has lodged a formal complaint with the Kotwali police, asserting that she was allegedly murdered by her in-laws, driven by demands for additional dowry. Officers have indicated that the deceased’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the findings will be pivotal in establishing the cause of death.

Police officials have stated that their investigation will proceed based on the allegations presented by Sapna’s family. They have assured that appropriate legal actions will be taken following the receipt of the post-mortem report. This case highlights the issue of dowry-related violence that persists in certain communities, raising concerns regarding women’s safety and rights in marital relationships.

As the investigation unfolds, local authorities are expected to engage with both families to gather further evidence. The community also awaits the outcome of the post-mortem results, which may play a crucial role in determining accountability and justice in this distressing situation.
