The United States has summoned Malaysia’s ambassador to discuss the nation’s longstanding policy regarding Israel. Recently, a specific incident highlighted this longstanding policy. An individual holding dual citizenship from the US and Israel arrived in Malaysia using his US passport. However, upon discovery of his Israeli citizenship, Malaysian authorities requested he leave the country, reflecting their firm enforcement of immigration regulations against Israeli nationals.

The situation escalated after the closure of the Network School, a community established for digital nomads by US investor Balaji Srinivasan, which faced criticism for reportedly involving Israeli participants. A probe by Malaysian authorities concluded that all attendees possessed valid travel documents, yet the school was still shuttered.

In response to these events, eight members of the US Congress expressed their outrage via a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, specifically targeting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s plans to monitor and deport Israeli citizens in Malaysia. The congressmen emphasised that Malaysia’s actions warranted a reevaluation of US economic and security ties with the country.

Despite these congressional objections, Prime Minister Ibrahim maintained his position, affirming that Malaysia would continue to deny entry to Israeli nationals. He cited the nation’s commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights and opposing perceived oppression in the region as the guiding principles for the government’s decision.
