US Air Force General Identifies Key Military Capabilities — the B-21, Sentinel, and F-47 as Vital for Future US Defence Readiness

The CSR Journal Magazine

General Dale White of the United States Air Force has identified three pivotal military capabilities that the nation would rely upon during significant crises. These assets include the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), and the F-47 next-generation fighter aircraft. He made these remarks during an assembly at Edwards Air Force Base on June 8, emphasising their importance for the future of the nation.

General White stated, “There are three programmes the future of our nation depends upon: Sentinel, B-21 and F-47,” addressing members of the Raider Combined Test Force. His comments underscored the strategic importance of these capabilities in safeguarding national interests during challenging times.

The announcement coincided with a significant milestone in the B-21 Raider programme, as an operational test pilot successfully flew the stealth bomber alongside a developmental test pilot. This development is seen as a crucial step in expediting the aircraft’s journey toward operational service.

Innovative Testing Methods Transform B-21 Programme

The United States Air Force has indicated that integrating operational and developmental testing early in the B-21 programme marks a notable shift from traditional testing methods. General White remarked that this approach would accelerate the bomber’s deployment. He highlighted the need for a more agile acquisition system, stating, “It’s a smarter and faster mindset that leverages modern production and test tools with the proper sense of urgency.”

As part of the programme, the arrival of a second B-21 aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base last summer allowed the Raider Combined Test Force to progress beyond initial flight performance assessments. This has enabled the team to commence crucial testing of mission systems and weapons integration.

Developed by Northrop Grumman, the B-21 Raider is characterised as a sixth-generation stealth bomber intended for long-range conventional and nuclear strike missions. It incorporates advanced technology and aims to gradually replace the aging B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit bombers, thereby reinforcing the US Air Force’s nuclear triad.

Future of the Sentinel ICBM and F-47 Fighter Programmes

The Sentinel programme, also mentioned by General White, is the next-generation ICBM that is set to replace the Minuteman III missile, which has been operational for over five decades. This initiative includes a new missile system, enhanced command, control, and communication capabilities, and extensive infrastructure upgrades across five states.

Designed for longevity, the Sentinel ICBM is expected to remain active through 2075 and will constitute the land-based segment of the US nuclear triad. This is critical for ensuring the country’s defence strategy remains robust and capable of addressing emerging challenges.

Furthermore, the F-47, another significant programme under the Next Generation Air Dominance initiative, is being developed by Boeing. This sixth-generation air superiority fighter is expected to replace the F-22 Raptor and will operate in conjunction with Collaborative Combat Aircraft drones in challenging operational environments.

The F-47 is anticipated to feature superior performance attributes, including a combat radius exceeding 1,000 nautical miles and speeds above Mach 2, thereby enhancing the Air Force’s capability to maintain air superiority in the face of evolving threats. The Air Force plans to procure more than 185 of these advanced aircraft.

Call for Urgency in Defence Initiatives

General White emphasised the necessity for expedited execution of critical defence programmes, cautioning against the hindrances of excessive bureaucracy. He conveyed his commitment to ensuring the availability of adequate resources for the B-21 programme while prioritising the acceleration of testing efforts.

During his address, he prompted the testing team to consider how they might remove barriers to progress, asserting that he would also strive to confront outdated procedures. “I worry that we don’t embrace urgency,” he noted, indicating his concern about the need for a swift response in defence matters.

In closing, General White expressed his unwavering confidence in the personnel involved in these programmes, recognising their commitment and excellence. He stated, “You’re the very best this nation has to offer,” underscoring the importance of urgency paired with purpose in successfully achieving the mission objectives.
