ISRO Images Reveal 90 Per Cent Of India Under Cloud Cover

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has reported that approximately 90 per cent of India’s landmass is currently enveloped in cloud cover. This follows a peak of 95 per cent coverage recorded on 21 and 22 July, as observed by ISRO’s weather satellites positioned above the equator. While the earlier peak level has slightly decreased, cloud coverage remains extensive across the country, with implications for upcoming weather patterns.

Utilising data from ISRO’s Insat 3DR and Insat 3DS satellites, alongside information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this assessment indicates a notable concentration of clouds over central, eastern India, the Bay of Bengal, and the northeastern regions. The current cloud layout has fuelled predictions regarding impending rainfall, with crucial developments expected in the coming days.

Satellite imagery reveals that, despite the extensive cloud cover, only western Rajasthan and certain parts of the desert belt exhibit relatively clearer skies. This distribution correlates with the position of the monsoon trough, a key driver of rain patterns that influences where precipitation is likely to occur.

Rainfall Forecast Over the Coming Week

The IMD has issued a seven-day forecast detailing expected rainfall across various regions. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand should anticipate widespread rain through the end of July, with instances of heavy showers likely. This pattern of rain is reflected in the satellite images, indicating sustained moisture levels in these areas.

In addition, Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive significant rainfall, while Odisha, positioned directly beneath a strengthening low-pressure area, is forecasted to experience particularly heavy rains. Conversely, regions in southern peninsular India, including Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and interior Karnataka, are projected to see predominantly isolated or scattered rainfall, indicating a notable differential in precipitation distribution across the country.

As the low-pressure systems develop, the anticipated rainfall is unlikely to be evenly distributed, aligning with the observed cloud patterns. These forecasts are critical for agricultural sectors and water resource management in the affected regions.

Impact of Low-Pressure Systems on Weather Patterns

The IMD has identified two active low-pressure systems influencing current weather conditions. One system, located over the northwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to persist in its current position and intensify over the next two to three days. This scenario suggests that the significant cloud cover over eastern India will lead to further precipitation rather than dissipating.

In contrast, a separate low-pressure area in southwest Rajasthan has recently contributed to exceptionally heavy rainfall in Gujarat, indicating localised impacts from these weather systems. The forecasts suggest that while eastern and central India is poised for continued rainfall, the western regions may remain largely dry.

Overall, the IMD’s latest outlook indicates that high levels of cloud cover and precipitation are expected to continue throughout the upcoming week. Areas in central, eastern, and northwestern India are likely to experience sustained cloud cover and rainy conditions, while southern regions maintain a comparatively drier profile for the time being.
