“UBT Sena Will Fight Student Protest Cases Free Of Cost”: Aaditya Thackeray

The CSR Journal Magazine

Aaditya Thackeray, the MLA from Shiv Sena (UBT), asserted that students participating in protests related to examination irregularities are being unfairly targeted by the BJP-led governments at both the Centre and state levels. Speaking to the media on July 28 in Mumbai, he expressed concern over ongoing legal actions against these students despite previous assurances that such cases would be dismissed.

Thackeray highlighted the extensive protests occurring across multiple cities over the last ten days, attributing the unrest to government policies. He claimed that many students have been wrongfully subjected to police action and reiterated the commitment of Shiv Sena (UBT) to provide legal assistance at no cost.

“We have managed to aid students in many situations and will continue to do so. Any student receiving a notice can send it to us; numerous lawyers are willing to take on these cases pro bono,” he stated, urging the Chief Minister to withdraw the FIRs filed against the protesters.

Allegations of Excessive Force and Irregularities

In his address, Thackeray accused the authorities of employing excessive force against the demonstrators. He claimed that extreme measures, including the use of AK-47s and severe lathi-charges, were directed at students. He called for accountability from those responsible for such actions, labelling the current government as “anti-youth.”

Thackeray also raised serious concerns regarding potential irregularities in the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MH-CET) examination. He queried whether there was an ongoing scam related to the examination process, insisting that the Chief Minister provide a clear response. “Many students will be adversely affected as the admission process approaches,” he said, emphasizing the need for transparency.

His statements come amid growing tensions around examination protocols, which have ignited further protests among the student community.

Supreme Court’s Intervention on Student Arrests

On the same day, the Supreme Court made a significant ruling concerning students detained during the protests. The court instructed all states to release students who are below 18 years of age, provided they do not have any previous criminal records. This decision indicates the court’s stance on protecting the rights of minors amidst widespread unrest.

Additionally, the Supreme Court ordered that no coercive actions be taken against students in connection with the protests, emphasizing the importance of preserving all digital evidence related to the demonstrations. The court noted that the allegations warranted an independent investigation, highlighting the need for a fair judicial process.

However, the court clarified that while investigations pertaining to the FIRs could proceed, authorities should refrain from taking any punitive actions against students until further notice, ensuring due process is upheld during this contentious period.
