The Southern Railway has prioritised the transportation of fertilisers to meet the needs of farmers during the Kharif sowing season. Between April and June 2026-27, the railway loaded a total of 13.7 lakh tonnes of fertilisers, highlighting its commitment to supporting agricultural activities. This figure marks a significant increase of 7 per cent compared to the same period in the previous financial year, 2025-26.

Coordination Ensures Timely Supply of Rakes

According to a release by Southern Railway, there have been no issues with the availability of railway rakes for the transportation of fertiliser within its jurisdiction. The railway has efficiently supplied rakes to all major ports it serves, including New Mangalore Port, Chennai Port, and V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin. This timely provision has been accomplished in response to demands raised by both port authorities and fertiliser companies.

Every indent placed by consignors has been addressed promptly, with no pending requests due to a lack of rakes. The seamless communication among Southern Railway, port authorities, and fertiliser companies has allowed for the anticipation and planning of rake requirements prior to the arrival of vessels carrying these essential shipments.

To further enhance operations, Southern Railway conducts round-the-clock monitoring of fertiliser indents at both divisional and headquarters levels. This strategy includes a priority placement system for rakes intended for fertilisers during the crucial Kharif season, ensuring that resources are effectively allocated to meet farmer needs.

Focus on Efficient Loading and Unloading Operations

Southern Railway has also maintained a strong emphasis on the loading and unloading operations at key port sidings and goods terminals. This attention to detail has facilitated the rapid turnaround of wagons, allowing for a smooth flow of fertiliser transportation. The railway is committed to maintaining its supply chain efficiency, ensuring that every rake required for fertiliser transit is readily available.
