Two Japanese Tourists Disappear In Jaipur, Bags With Passports Found In Taxi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Police in Rajasthan’s capital are investigating the mysterious disappearance of two Japanese tourists who went missing over the weekend after they failed to return to their hotel, officials said on Tuesday. The case has triggered a search operation in the city’s Ashok Nagar area after their belongings, including important documents, were left behind in a hired taxi.

The tourists, identified as Yuma Toyoda (25) and Hibiki Shiba (25), arrived in Delhi from Japan on 6 February and travelled to Jaipur on 7 February where they checked into a hotel in the Brahmapuri area. Police said the pair hired a taxi that night to visit a local restaurant but did not return, prompting concern from the driver and hotel staff.

Last Known Movements And Police Action

According to Ashok Nagar Station House Officer Moti Lal Sharma, the taxi driver waited outside the restaurant after dropping the tourists but they did not reappear. After waiting into the early hours of 8 February without any contact, the driver reported the matter to police the following day. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the restaurant and surrounding areas to trace the couple’s last known movements.

Police noted that their bags, including passports and personal effects, were left inside the taxi, indicating they did not depart the area on their own with their belongings. The tourists’ mobile phones have been unreachable since Saturday, adding to concerns about their welfare. Authorities have lodged a missing persons report and are coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs to contact family members and Japanese authorities.

Investigative Efforts And Public Safety Concerns

Law enforcement officials have stepped up efforts to comb through CCTV footage and interview local residents and witnesses. Police said various scenarios are being considered, including the possibility that the tourists may have gone to a different location without informing the taxi driver or may have encountered a safety issue. Officers are also checking travel data, transaction logs and transport routes in and around Jaipur for additional clues.

Local tourism officials have urged any residents or visitors with information to come forward, stressing the importance of community support in locating the missing tourists. Given the international dimension, authorities are working to ensure timely exchange of information with overseas counterparts to aid the search.

The disappearance has highlighted ongoing safety concerns for foreign tourists in Rajasthan’s historic capital. Police have reiterated their commitment to resolving the case swiftly and ensuring the safety and confidence of international visitors in the region.
