Twisha Sharma’s Family Lawyer Claims Her Husband’s Court Appearance in Jabalpur Was Not ‘Surrender’

The CSR Journal Magazine

The legal representative for Twisha Sharma’s family has claimed that there was no formal surrender by her husband, Samarth Singh, despite him appearing at the Jabalpur District Court on May 22. Advocate Anurag Srivastav expressed to reporters that the court had instructed Singh to surrender either to the trial court or the investigating officer in Bhopal. He emphasised that Singh lacked the authority to surrender in Jabalpur.

Srivastav questioned the legitimacy of Singh’s presence at the Jabalpur District Court, stating that the trial court, situated in Bhopal, is where he should have presented himself. The lawyer noted that the case had garnered attention due to the ongoing investigation involving the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

During Singh’s court appearance, Srivastav alleged irregularities, suggesting that Singh sat in darkness without appropriate courtroom lighting, wearing a mask. He expressed concerns regarding the absence of the presiding judge and the unclear circumstances surrounding Singh’s presence. According to Srivastav, when he approached Singh, he immediately fled, with his legal team reportedly attempting to obstruct Srivastav’s inquiry, leaving confusion about the police’s involvement.

Context of the Case

Samarth Singh, who has been evasive since the tragic death of Twisha Sharma on May 12, arrived at the Jabalpur court seeking to surrender, as per his advocate, Saurabh Sunder. Singh’s actions come in light of severe allegations faced by him and his family regarding mental harassment and dowry demands made against Twisha. The victim’s family lodged a police complaint, which led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the situation.

Meanwhile, there has been significant legal activity regarding other parties connected to the case. The Madhya Pradesh High Court issued notices concerning a plea from Twisha’s father opposing anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh, Twisha’s mother-in-law. Advocate Ankur Pandey, representing the family, specified that a subsequent hearing would take place on May 25 to assess the bail objections.

Pandey highlighted that the High Court had also approved a second post-mortem for Twisha Sharma. This directive followed the family’s request, which was initially denied by a lower court. The court instructed the Director of AIIMS Delhi to assemble a team and coordinate for the autopsy, as Twisha’s body remains at AIIMS Bhopal.

Future Developments in the Investigation

In light of ongoing concerns, Samarth Singh has retracted his bail application from the High Court, committing to surrender before the relevant authorities—a move his legal team communicated to the court. Advocate Ankur Pandey clarified that Singh’s lawyer had sought the withdrawal for Singh to cooperate with the investigation.

Following these developments, the Madhya Pradesh government recommended a CBI inquiry into Twisha Sharma’s death cases, granting permission for the agency to conduct its investigation. This recommendation stems from the serious allegations made by Twisha’s family regarding her treatment by her in-laws.

Twisha Sharma, originally from Noida, married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025. The circumstances surrounding her death have sparked widespread attention, with her family urging for justice against the alleged abuses and harassment she faced during her marriage. The case continues to unfold, with the legal and investigatory proceedings attracting public interest as it highlights serious issues of domestic violence and the systemic challenges in addressing such cases.
