Trump Warns of Cancelling Iran Talks if Nuclear Inspections Are Blocked

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Washington would walk away from ongoing technical discussions with Iran if Tehran failed to honour commitments allowing international nuclear inspections, asserting that the United States had already secured guarantees on access for inspectors.

Speaking to reporters after arriving in Pennsylvania for a visit to the Mack Trucks facility in Lehigh County, Trump said progress was being made in negotiations with Iran and insisted that Tehran had agreed in principle to inspection arrangements being discussed as part of the diplomatic process.

Trump Insists Inspection Access Has Been Agreed

Addressing questions about whether inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would be allowed to operate in Iran under a future agreement, Trump rejected suggestions that Tehran had not committed to the proposal.

“They’re wrong. They’re wrong. They’re wrong. They know they’re wrong. They told us inside and we have it down 100 per cent for inspections. And if they were right, I’d cancel the meetings right now,” Trump said.

Asked when inspectors could be deployed, the US President said the process would move forward when conditions were suitable. “At the appropriate time. There’s no rush, but they’ll be on the ground at the appropriate time,” he said.

Progress in Talks and Strait of Hormuz Remarks

Trump said negotiations with Iran were advancing and argued that the country’s position had weakened considerably in recent months.

“We are doing very well with Iran. They’ve been decimated, and we’re making a deal with them, and we’ll see how that all goes,” he said.

Referring to developments involving the Strait of Hormuz, Trump claimed there had been a major disruption in oil movement following the first rounds of technical discussions held in Switzerland. The talks form part of a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities in the region.

“As you probably heard yesterday, we had 19 barrels of oil come off, and that’s the biggest in the history of the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s position on Iran’s nuclear programme, Trump said, “And the big thing is Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.”

Claims on Iran’s Military and Humanitarian Assistance

Trump also asserted that Iran’s strategic and military capabilities had been severely degraded.

“We have Iran in a position that nobody’s ever had. This should have been done for 47 years by other presidents. And we have Iran in a position where their military has been totally wiped out. Their leadership has been wiped out. Their radar has been wiped out,” he said.

The US President further indicated that any future economic arrangements involving Iran would include provisions to address humanitarian concerns within the country.

“Money that will be taken out of Iran is going to go to our farmers to give corn, soybeans, wheat to Iran because they have a hunger problem. They have a food problem. They have a medicine problem,” Trump said.

The remarks come as Washington and Tehran continue diplomatic engagements focused on nuclear inspections, sanctions relief and broader regional security issues following recent discussions held in Switzerland.
