Trump Completes Situation Room Meeting Without Decision; White House Insists Ceasefire Must Meet Conditions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The White House has not disclosed any conclusions following a meeting held by US President Donald Trump with his national security team in the Situation Room on May 30. Despite initial indications that the discussions would support a “final determination” on Iran, no specific decisions were made. According to a White House official, the meeting lasted for approximately two hours and ended without a formal announcement.

The official stated, “President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his red lines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.” This comment reaffirms Trump’s longstanding position regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities and the ongoing tensions in the region.

Trump had called the meeting to establish conditions surrounding potential agreements. He indicated that any arrangement aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts with Iran would require strict adherence to specified criteria, mentioning that “Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb,” among other stipulations.

Conditions for Ceasefire and Nuclear Agreements

The meeting addressed key demands related to the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for international shipping. Trump insisted that it must remain open for unrestricted traffic without tolls. He claimed that the US has already removed several underwater mines from the area and expects Iran to eliminate any remaining threats promptly.

However, Iranian officials have reportedly rebutted claims that they would adhere to conditions set forth by the US. An official from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, stated on state television that Tehran would not be coerced by external pressures. He remarked, “Tehran has said goodbye to the language of ‘must’ 47 years ago,” indicating Iran’s independence in its decision-making processes.

This situation arises amid discussions of a 60-day memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran. Reports suggest that this MoU includes an Iranian commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons and outlines initial negotiations focusing on the disposal of highly enriched uranium and limitations on future enrichment activities.

Iranian Rejection of Negotiation Claims

In addressing the critical issue surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei emphasised that this waterway is located within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. He reiterated the importance of establishing mechanisms that secure the interests of both nations while ensuring safe passage for international maritime activities.

“Certainly Iran and Oman, as two responsible countries, must adopt mechanisms that preserve their national interests and security as coastal states,” said Baghaei, affirming a need for cooperation to reassure the international community regarding the safety of shipping in the region.
