Trump Claims Iran Will Not Pursue Nuclear Weapons

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump stated that Iran has conceded it will not pursue nuclear weapons. His comments came during a recent interview with local media in Washington DC on June 7, 2023. Trump mentioned that a deal between the US and Iran is close, suggesting that only a few minor points remain unresolved.

Trump expressed his disapproval of prolonged military engagements, stating that the current situation with Iran is not indicative of an endless conflict. He noted that negotiations have been ongoing for three months under a largely effective ceasefire.

During the interview, Trump maintained that he has prevented Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities, characterising the nation as a powerful and dangerous entity likely to use such weapons. His comments reflected a strong stance against any potential nuclear threat from Iran.

Iranian Assets and Sanctions Negotiation

When asked about the possibility of unfreezing Iranian assets or lifting sanctions in any future agreement, Trump firmly stated that this would not happen. He clarified that, in the event of a successful deal, the US would ensure the elimination of any nuclear materials involved.

Trump explained that if a deal is reached, the US would work collaboratively to remove and destroy the nuclear materials, emphasising a commitment to thorough enforcement. He further indicated that if an agreement fails to materialise, military action would be considered as a last resort, with significant repercussions for Iran.

While discussing the Iranian regime, Trump highlighted the challenges faced by its leadership. He noted that the regime is being forced to confront decisions it had previously avoided over its 47-year history, expressing confidence in the effectiveness of the US blockade against Iran.

Reactions from Iranian Officials and CENTCOM’s Actions

Trump’s statements surfaced in the context of remarks made by Iranian Parliament Speaker MB Ghalibaf, who criticised the US for its alleged lack of commitment to a ceasefire and dialogue. Ghalibaf condemned the American naval blockade, claiming it demonstrates an understanding of power over negotiation.

Ghalibaf asserted that the recent US actions, along with their backing of the Zionist regime, rendered American bases and assets in the region as legitimate targets. In his view, the Iranian military remains ready to respond to perceived threats, a sentiment echoed in his statements shared on social media.

Furthermore, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that as of June 7, it has redirected 132 commercial vessels and disabled six to maintain compliance with the naval blockade against Iran. This development underscores the ongoing tension in the region and the assertive stance taken by US military forces regarding Iranian maritime activities.
