A pall of gloom descended over West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Friday, July 17, following a horrific collision between a speeding train and a school vehicle. The devastating accident, which occurred at the Gobindapur railway crossing, has claimed three lives including two young school children and an elderly bystander while leaving several other students injured.

The Incident: A Devastating Impact at the Crossing

The tragedy unfolded during the morning hours when a vehicle carrying local school children was attempting to cross the railway tracks at the Gobindapur railway gate. According to eyewitness accounts, a fast-approaching train struck the school van with immense force as it crossed.

The impact of the collision was so severe that it completely mangled the school vehicle. A local cyclist who happened to be waiting near the crossing was also caught in the wreckage, sustaining injuries.

Eyewitness Account: “The sound of the crash was deafening. The vehicle was dragged some distance, and there was immediate panic as we realized it was filled with school children. Everyone from the nearby area ran to help.”

Immediate Rescue Operations and Medical Response

Following the crash, local residents and bystanders immediately initiated rescue efforts. Displaying immense courage, locals pulled the injured children from the mangled remains of the van before emergency services could arrive. The injured students and the cyclist were rushed to the Berhampore Hospital. Medical personnel at the facility are closely monitoring the injured children, some of whom are reported to be in critical condition.

Strict Administrative Action and Arrests

As anger mounted among the local population over safety protocols at the crossing, police and railway authorities quickly intervened to restore order. Preliminary inquiries into how the school vehicle was allowed onto the tracks while a train was approaching led to immediate administrative action.

Gatekeeper Detained: The local railway gatekeeper on duty at the Gobindapur crossing has been arrested by police.

Joint Probe Launched: A joint investigation involving both the local district police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is currently underway to determine if there was a technical failure or human negligence behind the open gates.

State officials have assured that the medical expenses for the injured children will be covered, and instructions have been given to hospital authorities to provide the best possible care to the survivors. Meanwhile, the local community remains in deep mourning as police continue their investigation at the site.
