Bisleri International Partners With Thane Civic Body for Bottle Recycling in 123 Schools

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bisleri International, in collaboration with the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Education Department, has introduced the Bottles for Change initiative in all 123 municipal schools located in Thane. This programme aims to promote responsible plastic waste management and create awareness within schools and communities. The launch event featured prominent figures including Smt. Sharmila Pimpalolkar, the Mayor of Thane; Shri. Krushna Patil, the Deputy Mayor; Shri. Saurabh Rao (I.A.S.), the Municipal Commissioner; and Dr. Mitali Sancheti, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Education Department.

Focus on Teacher Training and Implementation

A significant aspect of the launch was a Teachers’ Training Workshop that prepared approximately 200 teachers, principals, and government officials from the participating schools. The training included lessons on effective plastic waste management techniques, source segregation, and the recycling process. Additionally, a structured plan for implementation in schools was shared with the attendees to facilitate smooth execution of the initiative.

Dr. Angelo George, CEO of Bisleri, stated that the foundation for environmental change lies in adopting small, everyday habits, which makes schools an ideal setting for such initiatives. Since its inception in 2019, Bottles for Change has been integrated with various educational institutions and housing societies to cultivate a culture of accountability regarding plastic waste. The partnership with the Thane Municipal Corporation is viewed as a critical move to enhance this outreach to all municipal schools.

Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar highlighted that partnerships with organisations like Bisleri are essential in advancing efforts in plastic waste management. She expressed optimism that the collaboration would empower students to actively engage in climate action within their communities, utilising available infrastructure more effectively.

Continuing the Fight Against Plastic Waste

The initiative is designed not only to raise awareness but also to implement a practical framework for action. The collaboration will establish regular collection of plastic waste, ensuring recyclable materials generated in schools are properly channelised for recycling. The involvement of trained teachers will be crucial in embedding sustainable practices, including source segregation and responsible disposal, into students’ daily activities.

Having first launched in Thane in 2019, Bottles for Change has successfully raised awareness about plastic waste and engaged communities, benefiting approximately 35,000 students and locals. To date, the initiative has facilitated the collection and recycling of 4,980 metric tonnes of plastic waste. Through this extended implementation across municipal schools, the programme aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility among students from an early age.

By fostering participation from young citizens, the initiative seeks to encourage a collective commitment towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment in the future.
