Three US Nationals Face Exit Order After Alleged Religious Promotion In Pune

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pune City Police have mandated that three American nationals depart India by May 10, 2026, after alleging involvement in activities that contravene the terms of their visas. The individuals, aged 53, 65, and 66, reportedly entered India on tourist visas between April 19 and April 21, 2026. This action follows an inquiry that suggested they had violated their visa regulations.

Engagement in Religious Activities

The authorities indicated that the trio had allegedly been engaged in distributing religious materials and conversing with local residents to promote Christianity. According to the additional commissioner of police, the inquiry revealed that these activities were deemed inappropriate for individuals on tourist visas. As a result, the police took the decision to issue the “Leave India Notice” in compliance with the regulations outlined in the Immigration and Foreigners Act.

The situation came to light on April 27, 2026, in the Shukrawar Peth area of Pune. It was reported that the three nationals approached a private cab driver and handed him pamphlets in various languages, including English, Hindi, and Marathi. They allegedly attempted to persuade the driver regarding their religious beliefs, prompting him to inform the police personnel who were nearby for a rally.

Upon receiving the alert, the police took the three foreigners to the local police station, where their travel documents underwent verification. Authorities conducted a search of their belongings, discovering a significant quantity of printed material related to religious messaging. The materials raised concerns regarding their adherence to the laws governing their stay in India.

Further Investigation and Enforcement Action

A deeper investigation led by the Foreigners Registration Office revealed that the actions of the three US nationals were in violation of the stipulations associated with their tourist visas. This breach of terms necessitated a formal response from the police, culminating in the issuance of the notice compelling them to leave the country within the designated timeframe.

The individuals’ activities have raised attention within local and legal frameworks regarding the enforcement of immigration laws, particularly concerning religious activities conducted by foreign nationals. The police have underscored the importance of adhering to visa limitations and the local regulations that govern foreign visitors in India.

This incident highlights ongoing discussions regarding the balance between religious freedom and the legal frameworks regulating the activities of tourists in the country. Authorities emphasise that while individuals are welcome to visit India, they must respect the legal boundaries defined by their visa categories.
