Three Founders of GamezKraft Technologies Arrested in Money Laundering Case After ED Raids

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained three founders of Gamezkraft Technologies Ltd on charges related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on May 8, 2023. Deepak Singh and Prithvi Raj Singh were apprehended in the National Capital Region, while Vikash Taneja was taken into custody in Bengaluru. The ED subsequently secured the transit remand of Deepak and Prithvi for their appearance before a court in Bengaluru, whereas Taneja was produced before the corresponding jurisdictional court immediately.

The arrests were made following extensive searches executed by the ED on May 7, 2023, targeting 17 locations associated with Gamezkraft and its founders across Karnataka and the NCR. Officials indicated that the raiding team confiscated various documents believed to be relevant to the ongoing investigations.

Based on the evidence discovered during these searches, authorities concluded that the founders are implicated in money laundering activities. This development comes as part of a broader inquiry that has raised concerns about the conduct of online gaming companies.

Background of the Case

A formal case under the PMLA has been initiated against Gamezkraft Technologies Ltd and its affiliated entities, as a consequence of multiple FIRs alleging fraud and cheating against the company and its founders. The allegations include their involvement in various online real money games, such as ‘RummyCulture’ and the rummytime app, which reportedly have associations with tragic incidents, including cases of suicide linked to financial distress among players.

Further scrutiny has been placed on the online gaming sector, especially in light of recent legislative developments in India. The government’s active pursuit of companies involved in online money gaming underscores a growing concern over the potential negative impacts of such platforms on users.

The legislative context gained traction after President Droupadi Murmu endorsed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, which was recently passed by Parliament. This law aims to foster e-sports and social gaming while imposing restrictions on detrimental online gaming services and related financial transactions.

Impact of the New Legislation

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill is designed to promote responsible gaming by allowing for the growth of e-sports and social games, whilst implementing a comprehensive ban on the operation, advertisement, and facilitation of online money games, regardless of their reliance on skill or chance. Notably, the legislation does not sanction players engaged in online money games; instead, it targets those who provide such services or financially support them.

As part of the enforcement measures under this new framework, the Central government may empower designated officers to conduct investigations, searches, and seizures of both digital and physical assets related to violations. In specific cases where suspected criminal activity is present, these officers will have the authority to enter premises and arrest individuals without a warrant.

This legislation reflects a decisive move by the Indian government to better regulate the online gaming industry, balancing the promotion of legitimate gaming enterprises whilst attempting to curtail illicit financial activities associated with gambling. The implications of these developments for stakeholders in the sector, including players, operators, and regulators, will continue to unfold in the coming months.
