A tragic incident occurred on April 10, 2026, in the Yamuna River at Vrindavan, located in Mathura District, when a boat capsized. According to Suresh Chandra Rawat, the Superintendent of Police for Rural areas, the accident has resulted in the death of ten individuals, while twenty-two others have been rescued. The incident has prompted an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies.

Rawat reported that emergency services were rapidly deployed following the incident. Specifically, eight emergency response police vehicles and a fire rescue team, along with ambulances, were mobilised to assist in the rescue efforts. The initial count indicated that thirty-two individuals were rescued, but unfortunately, ten were confirmed dead, and twenty-two are safe.

The scale of the search operation has been significant, with multiple teams actively scouring the river. Rawat indicated that there were eight teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), five teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and three teams from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) engaged in the operation. The search area covered a distance of 14 kilometres, with nearly 120 private divers taking part in the efforts.

Ongoing Search Efforts

Search operations commenced early on the morning following the incident, with efforts led by the NDRF, SDRF, and PAC boats, alongside local divers. The involvement of deep-sea divers from the NDRF was also confirmed, enhancing the search capabilities in this challenging environment. According to Rawat, the teams began their efforts at approximately 5:30 AM on Saturday, focusing efforts on locating any missing persons in the area.

Authorities are in the process of verifying how many passengers were aboard the ill-fated boat at the time of capsizing. Rawat stated that a definitive count was still being established, as some individuals were taken to various hospitals for treatment, including private facilities. Confirmation of the total number of passengers is essential to determine if anyone is still unaccounted for.

Assistant District Magistrate (Judicial) Ved Priya Arya noted that rescue agencies are effectively coordinating their efforts with local administration. Arya mentioned that various rescue teams, including SDRF, NDRF, PAC, and fire rescue teams, have been actively involved in the operation. Communication is maintained with the families of victims and survivors, assuring them that efforts will continue until everyone is accounted for.

Government Response and Assistance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia payment from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) in response to this tragic event. The Prime Minister stated that the next of kin of each deceased person will receive an amount of Rs 2 lakh. Additionally, individuals who sustained injuries in the incident will be compensated with Rs 50,000 for their medical needs.

The ongoing rescue and search efforts near Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan remain a priority for officials, with assurances from authorities that they are committed to recovering everyone involved in the incident. Meanwhile, the search continues across the affected areas of the Yamuna River as teams work collaboratively to locate any remaining individuals.
