The voter turnout in Tamil Nadu has been recorded at 17.69 per cent as of 9 am on April 23. The turnout data indicates varying degrees of participation across different districts within the state. Tiruppur district emerged with the highest turnout of 20.38 per cent, while Chennai saw a lower participation rate at 16.51 per cent. Erode district registered a noteworthy turnout of 19.55 per cent.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has confirmed that polling began across 152 constituencies in Tamil Nadu this morning, amid heightened security measures. Voters are expected to cast their ballots until 6:00 pm today, with voting wrapped up by the evening.

Archana Patnaik, the Chief Electoral Officer for Tamil Nadu, reported that the electorate comprises over 5.73 crore voters. Of these, 2,93,04,905 are female voters, 2,80,30,658 are male voters, and 7,728 belong to the third gender. The polling process also accommodates 14,59,039 first-time voters and 68,501 service voters, alongside 4,18,541 postal votes already received prior to election day.

West Bengal Registers 18.76 Per Cent Turnout

In West Bengal, the voter turnout captured during the first phase of polling stands at 18.76 per cent. Various districts have reported differing turnout figures, with Paschim Mednipur leading at 20.51 per cent. Following closely are Bankura with a turnout of 20.20 per cent and Jhargram at 19.84 per cent. The polling for this phase involves 152 Assembly constituencies across the state.

Polling not only reflects local issues but also highlights crucial electoral battles as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeks a fourth consecutive term in office. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 77 seats in the last election, is aggressively campaigning to regain control of the state government.

The first phase involves 1,478 candidates competing for the 152 Assembly seats, indicating a competitive electoral landscape. The ECI is overseeing the proceedings to ensure a free and fair election process.

Electoral Context and Key Players

The main contest in Tamil Nadu appears to be between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes Congress, DMDK, and VCK, and the National Democratic Alliance led by AIADMK with BJP and PMK as allies. The DMK administration, drawing on its Dravidian 2.0 initiative, aims to consolidate its political position against opposition forces. The AIADMK-led coalition is striving to make a resurgence after its tenure.

A significant aspect of the elections is the debut of actor-turned-politician Vijay with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), potentially adding a third dimension to an already vibrant political engagement in the state.

As the counting of votes is slated for May 4, 62 counting centres have been set up to facilitate a seamless transition following the completion of voting. This organisational arrangement reflects the government’s commitment to uphold electoral integrity and efficiency throughout the process.
