The recent oath-taking ceremony for the members of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was held on May 11, 2023, following the success of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the state elections. Notable leaders, including Edappadi K. Palaniswami, O. Panneerselvam, and Udhayanidhi Stalin, were among those who took their oaths. The gathering also included several ministers such as N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, KG Arunraj, and KA Sengottaiyan.

The ceremony began with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay taking his oath of office as a member of the Assembly. The oath was administered by pro tem Speaker M. V. Karuppaiah, marking the official commencement of the new legislative session for the MLAs.

In the recent elections, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the largest party in the Assembly, winning 108 seats. However, it fell short of the majority threshold of 118 seats and has since garnered support from various other parties, including Congress, VCK, Left parties, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Chief Minister Vijay Promises Transparency and Accountability

During his inaugural speech following the oath-taking, Chief Minister Vijay emphasised his commitment to establishing a transparent governance model. He expressed a desire to manage the government openly and publicly. His remarks included a critique of the previous DMK administration, alleging mismanagement that depleted the state’s treasury.

“After reviewing everything, I intend to release a white paper to the people. I want my government to be a transparent government,” Vijay stated. He promised to operate without secrecy, urging citizens to be patient as he seeks to fulfil his commitments. He highlighted efforts to ensure safety and welfare for women as a priority.

Vijay also voiced concern over the financial state of Tamil Nadu, attributing “poor financials” to the outgoing government. He claimed the previous administration had left debts exceeding Rs 10 lakh crore, resulting in an empty treasury. “It is in such a situation that we have taken charge,” he added, underscoring the urgent need for responsible financial management.

Initial Initiatives and Policy Focus

The new Chief Minister signed the first set of official documents after taking the oath, which included approvals for several significant initiatives. Among these was the provision of 200 units of free electricity to families and the establishment of Special Task Forces aimed at combating drug-related issues and enhancing women’s safety in the state.

Vijay reiterated his commitment not to misuse public funds, stating that his administration would prioritise essential services, including education, infrastructure, and water supply. He aimed to ensure that public resources are utilised effectively for the benefit of the citizenry.

Despite potential challenges, Vijay affirmed that he considers all citizens of Tamil Nadu as his responsibility, regardless of their political affiliations or opinions. He conveyed a firm stance on accountability, aiming to regain public trust and support for the government’s initiatives.
