With temperatures exceeding 40°C, healthcare professionals are witnessing a significant increase in heat-related illnesses, particularly those impacting digestion. Reports indicate a steady rise in patients presenting with symptoms ranging from acidity and bloating to vomiting and diarrhoea, even among individuals who have not consumed outside food. District hospitals across the region have established dedicated clinics to address the influx of patients suffering from these heat-related issues.

The manifestations of stomach pain and diarrhoea are reportedly prevalent among these heat-induced illnesses, highlighting the broader effects of extreme temperatures beyond mere dehydration and fatigue. Individuals with pre-existing digestive conditions are experiencing heightened difficulties, as the soaring heat exacerbates underlying gut issues, resulting in more intense and frequent symptoms.

Impact of High Temperatures on the Digestive System

Doctors explain that elevated temperatures create favourable conditions for the rapid multiplication of bacteria and viruses, subsequently increasing the risk of gastrointestinal infections. Alongside this, the human body tends to lose more fluids through sweating. If these fluids are not adequately replenished, it leads to dehydration, which hampers the digestive system’s functionality, thereby raising vulnerability to infections.

“Extreme temperatures can cause blood vessels to expand, diverting blood flow away from the digestive organs to aid in regulating body temperature. This diversion can disrupt digestion, leading to cramps, diarrhoea, and bloating,” stated Dr. Mahesh Kumar Gupta, Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology at Marengo Asia Hospital in Gurugram, in a statement to India Today Digital. Moreover, high temperatures can accelerate microbial growth in food, increasing the likelihood of consuming contaminated items.

Furthermore, dehydration can disrupt essential digestive processes. “Adequate hydration is crucial for maintaining enzyme functions, protecting the intestinal lining, and facilitating the smooth transit of food through the digestive tract,” Dr. Gupta added.

Strategies to Protect Digestive Health

Healthcare professionals suggest that maintaining proper hydration should be a top priority. Individuals are encouraged to consume sufficient water, along with electrolyte-rich beverages and hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid poorly stored dairy products, caffeine, fizzy drinks, and processed foods, as these can irritate the digestive system.

Should symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting persist beyond a day, seeking medical attention becomes crucial. It is important to recognise that during episodes of diarrhoea, beneficial gut bacteria may be diminished, enabling harmful bacteria to flourish. This imbalance can exacerbate symptoms and could potentially lead to heat exhaustion.

As the heatwave continues, it remains essential for individuals to be vigilant about their gut health and to employ strategies aimed at preventing heat-related digestive ailments.
