Surat is currently dealing with a significant flood situation following heavy rainfall that has resulted in rising creek water levels. Various parts of the city have been inundated, forcing the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Fire Brigade to undertake large-scale rescue operations. Areas most severely affected include Parvat Patiya and Godadara, where roads have been submerged under several feet of water, isolating residents and disrupting everyday life.

An India Today team performed an exclusive ground report from a fire department rescue boat to evaluate the extent of the flooding. The images from these areas illustrate the extensive damage caused, with rescue crews working diligently to evacuate trapped residents from submerged neighbourhoods while the floodwaters continue to rise.

The flooding has turned main roads connecting Parvat Patiya and Godadara into turbulent rivers, rendering vehicular movement impossible. As water continues to infiltrate residential areas, numerous citizens are now confined to their homes, with essential supplies becoming increasingly scarce, particularly for drinking water and milk.

Rescue Operations Underway Amidst Rising Waters

In response to the dire situation, NDRF and fire department personnel have been deployed throughout the affected regions, executing continuous rescue and relief efforts. During the ground evaluations, fire department teams were observed rescuing numerous residents and families trapped in the floodwaters. The anxiety and fear among those awaiting evacuation have been palpable.

Many vehicles, including large trucks and tractors, remain partially submerged along roads and outside housing societies, with smaller vehicles entirely lost beneath the rising waters. The main BRTS bus stand and a local petrol station have also been fully submerged, exacerbating the difficulties faced by both residents and emergency services.

Homes and shops in multiple low-lying areas have been affected as waters have entered, leading to fears of financial losses running into crores of rupees. Authorities have taken precautionary measures, including disconnecting electricity supply in these regions to reduce the risk of accidents, further complicating the lives of those already dealing with flooding inside their homes.

Forecast and Ongoing Challenges for Residents

Rescue agencies are actively patrolling inundated neighbourhoods to ensure all stranded residents receive assistance. Given the India Meteorological Department’s predictions of additional adverse weather, officials anticipate that the upcoming hours will pose significant challenges for the already affected areas. NDRF Inspector Parmeshwar highlighted their deployment beginning early in the morning, responding to a critical situation with substantial waterlogging already apparent upon arrival.

Throughout the operation, over 300 individuals, including children and elderly residents, have reportedly been rescued. Inspecting the conditions, it became evident that many workers at an under-construction site were trapped in a low-lying area, which became quickly inundated. Some sought refuge on earthen mounds or rooftops as floodwaters surged into their shelters.

Earlier in the night, approximately 250 people had to be rescued from near a bridge in Dindoli and relocated to safer locations. Authorities have advised residents to avoid flooded areas and to cooperate with the ongoing rescue efforts. Amidst heightened water levels and predictions of further rainfall, emergency services remain on high alert to mitigate potential casualties.
